Adelaide Crows

Big-bodied midfielder Cam Ellis-Yolmen led all comers in Adelaide's 53-point loss to Glenelg, finishing the match with 36 disposals, nine clearances, seven tackles and five inside-50s. 

Hugh Greenwood – who is yet to play an AFL game this season – had 19 disposals, while big man Darcy Fogarty played in defence against former Richmond big man Liam McBean, who booted nine.

Draftee half-back flanker Lachlan Scholl was busy with 34 touches and eight rebound-50s, while third-year forward Myles Poholke kicked three goals to go with his 25 disposals.

Paul Hunter, a ruckman on the rookie list, dominated the middle of the ground with 37 hitouts to go along with 15 disposals.

Brisbane Lions

Allen Christensen remains in the frame for a senior berth after a prolific display in the Lions' 65-point win over the NT Thunder in their NEAFL season opener at TIO Stadium on Saturday night. 

The classy midfielder gathered 34 possessions, 21 of them and a goal coming in a scene-setting first half in the wet.

Tom Cutler also enjoyed a day out with 22 touches and four goals, while Cedric Cox slotted three. 

The Lions were also well served by the experienced Ryan Lester, tall defender Sam Skinner, big forward Toby Wooller (two goals) and rookie Mitchell Hinge.

Carlton

Ben Reid made a successful return to football after his latest soft-tissue injury scare (a minor quad complaint), kicking three goals and four behinds.

Reid also had 20 disposals and four marks in the Pies' three-point win over Coburg.

Ben Crocker was very busy with 33 disposals (including 17 kicks and eight marks) and a goal, as was inside midfielder Rupert Wills (26).

Forward Tim Broomhead played his first match since breaking his leg against the goalpost in round two of the AFL last year.

Father-son selection Callum Brown was also prominent in the middle of the ground with 25 disposals and a goal, while younger brother Tyler had 16 and a very impressive speccy (below).

Carlton

Key forwards Mitch Brown and James Stewart produced strong auditions to replace the injured Shaun McKernan, bagging nine goals between them in the Bombers' 131-point win over standalone VFL club Frankston at SkyBus Stadium on Sunday.

Brown, who played the opening two rounds at AFL level before being dropped, kicked a game-high five goals while Stewart, who has battled injury and hasn't played at the highest level since round 11 last year, slotted four.

Midfielder Kyle Langford responded strongly to being axed after an inexplicable brain fade against St Kilda, gathering 25 possessions to form part of a dominant midfield that also included busy performances from young runners Dylan Clarke (30 touches) and rookie Trent Mynott (28).

Fremantle

Promising key forward Brennan Cox emerged unscathed after returning in Peel Thunder's nail-biting three-point win over West Perth in their WAFL opener at Mandurah on Saturday.

The powerful 20-year-old, who sustained a hamstring injury in Fremantle's second JLT Community Series game against West Coast, kicked two goals to help Peel set up a 37-point lead by three-quarter time before the 2018 runner-up stormed home, only to fall short.

Developing ruck duo Scott Jones and Lloyd Meek amassed 58 hit-outs between them, providing silver service to young runners Mitch Crowden (32 possessions, five tackles and seven inside 50s) and Tom North (26 touches and 10 tackles) and rookie Stefan Giro (24 touches and a goal).

Meanwhile, lively small forward Sam Switkowski suffered a hip injury.

Geelong Cats

Young defender Zach Guthrie was Geelong's best in the 14-point loss to Richmond.

The 20-year-old, who has played 16 games in his first two years, intercepted well to finish with 16 touches and six marks. With Mark O'Connor injuring his hip against Adelaide in the AFL, Guthrie could come into the frame for selection.

Forward James Parsons was busy with 18 disposals (including 14 kicks), while big men Wylie Buzza and Ryan Abbott kicked two each.

Young midfielder Jordan Cunico suffered what appears to be a bad ankle injury.

Gold Coast Suns

Key forward Sam Day kicked five goals from 18 disposals in the Suns' 11-point loss to Canberra.

Despite being the leading goalkicker for the club (who is still on the list), Day has not yet managed a senior game this year.

Ball magnet Will Brodie was very busy with 38 touches, while rookie Michael Rischitelli had 29 of his own.

Aaron Young was another to feature prominently with 27 and a goal, while young key position player Brayden Crossley kicked three.

GWS Giants

A pair of top draft picks led the way in the Giants' 29-point loss to Sydney.

The classy Aiden Bonar (pick 11 in 2017) had 30 disposals and kicked a goal, while Jackson Hately (pick 14 in 2018) finished with 27 and six tackles.

Nick Shipley was another who was busy (27 touches), while big man Lachie Keeffe had 19 disposals after being omitted from the senior side for the returning Shane Mumford.

Rookie key forward Zach Sproule top-scored with three goals.

Defender Aidan Corr played the first half in his return from a long-term groin injury.

Hawthorn

A nine-goal double-punch from young key forward duo Jackson Ross and Mitch Lewis helped the Box Hill Hawks unfurl their 2018 premiership flag in style with a 62-point win over the Casey Demons at Box Hill City Oval on Sunday.

Teenager Ross bagged five goals, including four in the first half, before Lewis took over in the second half to finish with four majors.

Forgotten Hawk Ryan Schoenmakers was also a solid contributor in the air, chiming in with two goals.

Ruckman Marc Pittonet was tireless around the stoppages with 44 hit-outs, while rookie runner Harry Jones was also important in the midfield and Teia Miles started numerous attacks from defence.

Melbourne

Hard nut Corey Maynard was a rare shining light in the Casey Demons' 62-point round one loss to reigning premier Box Hill Hawks at Box Hill City Oval on Sunday.

Maynard, who played one AFL game in each of 2017 and 2018, gathered 27 possessions to easily be the Demons' best ball winner.

Fellow midfielder Billy Stretch had 20 touches, while pocket-sized rookie runner Kade Chandler had 17 and slotted two early goals.

North Melbourne

This weekend: Werribee v North Melbourne - Saturday, April 6, 7pm, Avalon Airport Oval

Little man Nathan Hrovat staked his claim for a senior recall with an assured performance in a Kangaroos team that went down by 39 points at Werribee on Saturday night.

Hrovat was one of the key reasons the Roos led early and, despite a lack of support, finished with 26 possessions and a goal.

Fellow runner Jed Anderson returned from a hamstring issue and played three quarters, having 11 disposals and laying eight tackles in a defensive role.

Experienced defender Sam Wright showed he had overcome a quad problem by gathering 14 disposals and taking 11 marks.

Key forward Nick Larkey hauled in 10 marks and kicked three goals from limited opportunities, while rookie forward Cameron Zurhaar (19 disposals) and versatile draftee Joel Crocker (17 disposals, one goal) also tried hard.

Rookie defender Tom Murphy collected 21 possessions and took 12 marks.

Teenage rookie Kyron Hayden also impressed after being tasked with nullifying role former Fremantle and Gold Coast midfielder Michael Barlow.

Port Adelaide

Midfielder Jack Trengove is developing a case of leather poisoning, finishing with 42 disposals (including 13 marks, 10 tackles and seven clearances) after 44 last week.

Former Lion Sam Mayes was busy with 31 disposals and seven rebound-50s, while experienced key back Matthew Broadbent – who missed all of last year with foot and ankle injuries – had 28 and 12 marks.

Vice-captain Hamish Hartlett is on the comeback trail after an ACL injury last year, but didn’t play at any level due to hamstring tightness.

Richmond

Premiership player Josh Caddy played his first game for the season after overcoming an ankle injury. He played three quarters, mostly in the midfield, to finish with 17 disposals in the Tigers' 14-point win.

Young ruck-forward Callum Coleman-Jones was named best for the side with two goals, while fellow big men Mabior Chol (three goals) and Callum Moore (two) also chipped in.

Draftee midfielder Jack Ross inched closer to a possible AFL debut with 21 disposals and eight tackles, while former small forward Shai Bolton once again impressed in the middle of the ground (22, eight marks and six tackles).

St Kilda

This weekend: Footscray v Sandringham - Friday, April 5, 7pm, VU Whitten Oval 

Experienced campaigner David Armitage was the best of the St Kilda-listed players in Sandringham's 43-point loss to Footscray.

Armitage, who is yet to play a senior game this year, had 20 disposals and laid 10 tackles.

Recruit Nick Hind, who was drafted from Essendon's VFL side, had 18 touches and kicked a goal.

Youngsters Ben Long and Ed Phillips both finished with 17 disposals and a goal.

Sydney Swans

This weekend: GWS Giants v Sydney - Saturday, April 6, 12.55pm, Giants Stadium

It was a day out for James Rose, who dominated with 39 disposals and four goals in the Swans' 29-point win over GWS.

James Rowbottom was also in the Swans' best, finishing with 31 disposals and six tackles.

Former Roo Ryan Clarke was busy with 27, while veteran Kieren Jack continues to build after missing part of the pre-season with a knee injury, finishing with 22.

West Coast Eagles

State league affiliate: East Perth (WAFL)
This weekend: Perth v West Coast - Saturday, April 6, 2.15pm, Leederville Oval

Key forward Jake Waterman was one of the Eagles' best, kicking five goals in the club's first WAFL match as a standalone side.

Waterman had been dropped after round one of the AFL but impressed with the haul from 11 disposals in West Coast's 46-point loss to Perth.

Jarrod Cameron, younger brother of Brisbane's Charlie, caught the eye, while premiership player Will Schofield held up well in an under-the-pump defence.

Young midfielder Brayden Ainsworth (24 disposals) and Brendon Ah Chee (22) led the disposal count for the Eagles.

Western Bulldogs

This weekend: Footscray v Sandringham - Friday, April 5, 7pm, VU Whitten Oval 

Midfielder Lukas Webb made a successful return to football after seriously injuring his neck in August, finishing with 24 disposals and a goal.

Pat Lipinksi was one of the Dogs' best, the usual forward playing in the midfield and leading the disposal count with 26 and laying eight tackles.

Fourth-year defender Bailey Williams was solid in defence with 19 touches and seven marks, while mature-age recruit Will Hayes impressed in his first game as an AFL-listed Dog; the former Footscray midfielder finishing with 24 disposals and a goal.
