WEST COAST forward Mark Nicoski made his first tentative steps towards an AFL comeback on Saturday when he played for the Subiaco reserves on Saturday.
 
In his first game since he suffered a debilitating hamstring tendon injury in the 2012 NAB Cup Grand Final, Nicoski played 65 minutes to pass another test on his road to recovery.
 
The 29-year-old played his best season in 2011, kicking 41 goals as a small forward for the Eagles.
 
Out-of-favour Eagles defender Mitch Brown made a case for a recall keeping Claremont forward Chad Jones goalless and restricting him to just one kick. His effort was even better considering Brown's team, East Fremantle, lost by 42 points.
 
Essendon's Courtenay Dempsey played in the VFL after incurring a club-imposed suspension and was among his team's best players. After the Bombers' shock loss to the Brisbane Lions, Dempsey's absence will remain a talking point throughout the week.
 
Joe Daniher kicked four goals and remains in contention to make his debut while Leroy Jetta and Travis Colyer played well.
 
Collingwood's Jackson Paine kicked five goals for Collingwood VFL against Geelong VFL just days after senior coach Nathan Buckley said lack of form and defensive efforts were keeping him out of the senior side. With Goldsack injured he will come under consideration at selection.
 
Veteran Ben Johnson returned with 28 disposals while teammate Alan Didak kicked three goals and keeps putting his name in front of selectors. Ben Hudson was good again and will be considered if Darren Jolly is suspended.
 
Geelong's Nathan Vardy got another game under his belt kicking one goal for the Cats.
 
Port Adelaide youngster John Butcher was once again disappointing managing just seven touches for Port Adelaide as he tries to recapture some form post injury.
 
However Sydney Swan Jesse White, who nearly joined Adelaide in the off-season, kicked 10 goals for Sydney Swans reserves against Queanbeyen in the NEAFL.

Consistent sub for Hawthorn Shane Savage kicked three goals in a good win for the Box Hill Hawks over the Casey Scorpions. Jed Anderson was lively too.

Cameron Pedersen was one of Casey's best in an otherwise disappointing Scorpions display.

Jordan Gysberts among the best for the Werribee Tigers in an 89-point thrashing of the Coburg Tigers.

Trent Dennis-Lane kicked four goals for Sandringham Zebras and continues to press for selection at the Saints.

Pies draftee Tim Broomhead, pick 20 in last year's NAB AFL Draft, made his first start for Collingwood, coming after a battle with glandular fever over the off-season.

Geelong's young and tall forward line – consisting of Vardy, Josh Walker (returning from a shoulder injury), Shane Kersten and Mitch Brown all had an impact on the game.

Geelong's forwards took a number of strong contested marks above or in front of their lunging opponents, with Brown's efforts particularly delightful.

Recently elevated Geelong rookie George Burbury was lively up forward for the Cats in the first half, roaming up to the wings and sprinting hard back to provide an option inside forward 50. He also took an impressive "superman" style mark, diving to his right.

The VFL Cats, though, had their first loss of the season falling to Collingwood by 13 points.

Hawthorn youngster Jed Anderson looked a class above in an impressive outing in Box Hill's emphatic win over the Casey Scorpions. Anderson kicked three goals to put himself back in the frame for a senior recall.

Tom Couch (29 touches), Cam Pedersen (27), Mitch Gent (24) and Sam Blease (20) were among the best for the Casey Scorpions.

Carlton ruckman Shaun Hampson racked up a phenomenal 68 hit-outs, and a goal, in the Northern Blues' 44-point win over North Ballarat. Jeremy Laidler also kicked two majors to move closer to a senior recall.

Former North Melbourne forward Ben Warren continued his stellar season in front of goal for Werribee, adding another five majors to his seaon's account in a big win over Coburg.

Andrew Embley had 28 possessions for Swan Districts in a 20-point loss to East Perth.
 
Blayne Wilson played well for East Perth in a tagging role and looks likely to be considered to make his debut for the Eagles.
 
Small forward Ashton Hams was a livewire for South Fremantle kicking three goals against Peel Thunder.

Boom Adelaide youngster Brad Crouch collected 23 disposals in West Adelaide's 15-point win over Port Adelaide Magpies on Friday night.

Veteran Crow Graham Johncock kicked three goals for the Magpies.

Port Adelaide defender Campbell Heath responded in the strongest possible fashion to his omission from the senior side, chalking up 24 touches for Woodville-West Torrens. Crows forward Jared Petrenko also had 24 for the Eagles.

Daniel Stewart, the other Power player dropped from last week's team, also had 20 possessions and kicked three goals.

Crows Brodie Martin, Richard Tambling, Matthew Jaensch and Aidan Riley were all strong contributors for Sturt.

Axed Power youngster Sam Colquhoun had 22 touches for Central District while Adelaide veteran Ian Callinan showed his class kicking five goals.

Jesse White kicked 10 goals for the Sydney Swans reserves at the SCG on Saturday in the Grand Final rematch against Queanbeyan.
 
Tom Mitchell also performed well in the 113-point win and had a few teammates.
 
Gold Coast Suns Joel Wilkinson and Maverick Weller made solid returns from injury in the NEAFL with the Suns recording a 77-point win over Morningside.
 
Tim Sumner kicked five to press claims for selection in a team that is suddenly hard to break into after four wins to start the season.
