COLLINGWOOD forward Travis Cloke has sympathy for Richmond's Dustin Martin as the young Tiger wrestles with his future.

After months of negotiations over a new deal to keep Martin at Punt Road, the 22-year-old informed the club on Monday that he wanted to pursue offers made by rival clubs.

Cloke went through an entire season of speculation in 2012, as he put contract negotiations on hold, before eventually signing a five-year deal to remain a Magpie.

The powerhouse 26-year-old said the players wanted greater freedom to change clubs, and the public and clubs would now have to accept it.

"It's a massive decision," Cloke said of Martin on Fox Footy's AFL360.

"We wanted free agency as players.

"As players, as clubs and as supporters, we've really got to welcome it and see how it goes.

"It's going to be testing times the first couple of years, but it's going to become part of the game and we've got to accept some players will move on."

Cloke also said he was still angry at bowing out of the finals in week one, jealous of the other finals teams and would not watch the Grand Final on September 27.

He said he had not followed any of the speculation following their demise against Port Adelaide, but hoped the Magpies would retain running defender Heath Shaw.

"I'd like to see him stay," Cloke said.

"I love 'Heater', he's a good friend of mine and I think he's got massive plusses for our football team, but obviously it doesn't come down to me."
