The AFL wishes to advise the Match Review Panel has reviewed eight of the nine matches from Round Five of the 2014 Toyota AFL Premiership Season. The following charges were laid:

Charges Laid:

Richard Douglas, has been charged with Rough Conduct against Callan Ward, Greater Western Sydney, during the second quarter of the Round Five match between Adelaide and Greater Western Sydney played at the Adelaide Oval on Sunday April 20, 2014.   

In summary, the matter has been directly referred to the Tribunal for its determination and he cannot accept an early plea on this matter. 

Scott Thompson, North Melbourne, has been charged with a Level One striking offence (80 demerit points) for striking Travis Cloke, Collingwood, during the first quarter of the Round Five match between North Melbourne and Collingwood played at the MCG on Saturday April 19, 2014. 

In summary, due to his previous poor record he can accept a one-match sanction with an early plea. 

Based on speaking with the umpire, the video evidence available and a medical report from the Collingwood Football Club, the incident was assessed as reckless conduct (two points), low impact (one point) and body contact (one point). This is a total of four activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level One Offence, drawing 80 demerit points. He has a bad record of 60 demerit points carried over within the last 12 months, increasing the penalty to 140 points and a one-match sanction. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to 105 points and a one-match sanction.

Darren Glass, West Coast Eagles, has been charged with a Level One engaging in Rough Conduct offence (125 points, one-match sanction) for engaging in rough conduct against Chad Wingard, Port Adelaide, during the fourth quarter of Round Five match between West Coast and Port Adelaide played at Patersons Stadium on Saturday April 19, 2014.  

In summary, due to his previous poor record, his one-match sanction must remain at one match, even with an early plea. 

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Port Adelaide Football Club, the incident was assessed as reckless conduct (two points), low impact (one point) and body contact (one point). This is a total of four activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level One Offence, drawing 125 demerit points. He has a bad record of 93.75 demerit points carried over within the last 12 months, increasing the penalty to 218.75 points and a two-match sanction. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to 164.06 points and a one-match sanction.

Hayden Ballantyne, Fremantle, has been charged with a Level Two striking offence (125 demerit points, one-match sanction) for striking Rhyce Shaw, Sydney, during the second quarter of the Round Five match between Fremantle and Sydney played at the SCG on Saturday April 19, 2014. 

In summary, he can accept a reprimand and 93.75 demerit points towards his future record with an early plea. 

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Sydney Football Club, the incident was assessed as intentional conduct (three points), low impact (one point) and body contact (one point). This is a total of five activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level Two Offence, drawing 125 demerit points and one-match sanction. He has no existing good or bad record. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to 93.75 points and a reprimand. 

Hayden Ballantyne, Fremantle, has been charged with a Level One misconduct (kneeing) offence (125 demerit points, one-match sanction) for kneeing Rhyce Shaw, Sydney, during the second quarter of the Round Five match between Fremantle and Sydney played at the SCG on Saturday April 19, 2014. 

In summary, he can accept a reprimand and 93.75 demerit points towards his future record with an early plea. 

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Sydney Football Club, the incident was assessed as negligent conduct (one point), low impact (one point) and body contact (one point). This is a total of three activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level One Offence, drawing 125 demerit points and one-match sanction. He has no existing good or bad record. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to 93.75 points and a reprimand.

Please note, for where a player has been charged with multiple offences during one match, under the Tribunal guidelines the points for each offence where the player either accepts a penalty or is found guilty are added together to form a total amount. For each amount of 100 points in the total penalty, there must be one match served as a result. Toby Greene, Greater Western Sydney Giants, has been charged with a Level Three striking offence (225 demerit points, two-match sanction) for striking Richard Douglas, Adelaide, during the second quarter of the Round Five match between Greater Western Sydney and Adelaide played at the Adelaide Oval on Sunday April 20, 2014.

In summary, he can accept a one-match sanction with an early plea. 

Based on speaking with the umpire and a medical report from the Adelaide Football Club, the incident was assessed as intentional conduct (three points), low impact (one point) and high contact (two points). This is a total of six activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level Three Offence, drawing 225 demerit points and two-match sanction. He has no existing good or bad record. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to 168.75 points and a one-match sanction. 

Adam Schneider, St Kilda, has been charged with a Level Two striking offence (125 demerit points, one-match sanction) for striking Mark Baguley, Essendon, during the second quarter of the Round Five match between St Kilda and Essendon played at Etihad Stadium on Saturday April 19, 2014. 

In summary, due to his previous poor record, his one-match sanction must remain at one match, even with an early plea. 

Based on the video evidence available and a medical report from the Essendon Football Club, the incident was assessed as intentional conduct (three points), low impact (one point) and body contact (one point). This is a total of five activation points, resulting in a classification of a Level Two Offence, drawing 125 demerit points and one-match sanction. He has a bad record of 93.75 demerit points carried over within the last 12 months, increasing the penalty to 218.75 points and a two-match sanction. An early plea reduces the sanction by 25 per cent to 164.06 demerit points and a one-match sanction.

Other Incidents Assessed:

The match day report against the Western Bulldogs' Koby Stevens for forceful contact from front-on against Carlton's Kane Lucas was assessed. The panel said the ball had been handballed to Lucas, who fumbled the ball. Stevens slowed as he came to the contest and made high contact in the tackling action with his arm. It was the view of the panel, after speaking to the umpire who laid the match-day report, as well as reviewing all available footage and receiving a medical report from the Carlton Football Club, that the force used in the contact was below that required to constitute a reportable offence. No further action was taken. 

Contact between the Western Bulldogs' Liam Jones and Carlton's Marc Murphy from the fourth quarter of Sunday's match was assessed. Murphy is running to the contest when Jones runs to shepherd for his team-mate, Liam Picken. Jones bumps Murphy within five metres of the football and makes significant body contact and high contact. After viewing all the available footage and receiving a medical report from the Western Bulldogs Football Club, it was the view of the panel that the force used by Jones was below that required to constitute a reportable offence. No further action was taken.
