The Victoria Country and Victoria Metro girls summer training hub squads have been announced.

Both squads will take part in two high-performance training camps across December and January to best prepare players for the 2024 Coates Talent League season.

Players selected in the summer training hubs will engage in football and wellbeing programs and will also be provided with individual development plans.

The players named in the summer training hub squads are aged 16 or 17 and will be eligible for selection for the 2024 AFL National Championships U18 Girls.

Victoria Country and Victoria Metro will conduct trial matches in April ahead of the National Championships, with additional players to be added to both squads for the trial games.

The announcement of the Victoria Country and Victoria Metro girls summer training hub squads follows last week’s announcement of the boys squads.

VICTORIA COUNTRY

The first camp for the Victoria Country girls squad will be held on December 18-19 at The Hangar, home of the Essendon Football Club. The second camp will be conducted at Federation University Ballarat from January 23-25.

The Victoria Country squad features representatives from each of the six Coates Talent League country programs – Bendigo Pioneers, Dandenong Stingrays, Geelong Falcons, Gippsland Power, GWV Rebels and Murray Bushrangers.

Six members of the 2024 AFL National Academy will take part in the Victoria Country summer training hub. They include Zoe Besanko, Ash Centra, Sara Howley, Millie Lang, Lucia Painter and Elli Symonds.

Howley this year took out the Coates Talent League Girls best and fairest as a bottom-year player. She averaged 33 disposals and one goal across 12 matches for the Geelong Falcons in the home-and-away season.

Centra claimed Victoria Country’s MVP award at the 2023 AFL National Championships U18 Girls and was selected in the All-Australian team.

Mel Hickey has again been appointed head coach of the Victoria Country girls team.

VICTORIA METRO

Victoria Metro’s first training camp will be conducted at The Hangar from December 19-20. A second camp will be held at Deakin University Geelong from January 23-25.

The Victoria Metro squad consists of players from the six Coates Talent League metro programs – Calder Cannons, Eastern Ranges, Northern Knights, Oakleigh Chargers, Sandringham Dragons and Western Jets.

Among those selected are 2024 AFL National Academy representatives Grace Baba, Sierra Grieves, Emma McDonald, Sophie McKay and Sienna Tallariti.

McKay, the daughter of Carlton premiership player Andrew and sister of Blues midfielder Abbie, was best afield in the 2023 AFLW Futures game, while Tallariti won the best on ground medal in the Oakleigh Chargers win over the Eastern Ranges in the Coates Talent League Grand Final.

Ty Vickery will serve as head coach of the Victoria Metro team.
