TOM LYNCH says Sunday's potential match-winning kick after the siren at the MCG was just a little beyond his range.

Lynch had the chance to live out every footballer's dream when he lined up from 55m on the boundary line with his team trailing by two points and the siren having sounded.

His booming kick looked good, but tailed away to the left and fell about a metre short.

"I thought it was alright off the boot," Lynch said on Tuesday.

"You've got to back yourself and believe you can do it, but I still think I was too far out.

"It had to be my very best kick from there.

"It was disappointing to miss."

Lynch joked he had the voice of former Suns coaching director and board member Malcolm Blight ringing in his head.

"I had Blighty in my ear thinking "go the torp", but it was a bit risky from there," Lynch said.

"I haven't practised them too much so I had to go the drop punt."

Blight famously used the torpedo to kick an after-the-siren winner from beyond 70m for North Melbourne against Carlton in 1976.

Despite the miss, it has taken little sheen off a stellar season from Lynch, who is favoured to earn his first All Australian selection.

He is also third on the Coleman Medal table, just three goals behind West Coast's Josh Kennedy, and has been hailed as the game's best player by former Brisbane Lions champion Jonathan Brown.

Lynch said Brown's comments – aired on Fox Footy on Monday night – were humbling.

"He's a bit biased towards the big forwards, I think," Lynch said.

"I've caught up with Browny over the years and he's been great.

"Every year I've felt like I've improved and I feel like I've still got a lot of improvement left in me.

"Every year I try and get fitter and stronger and improve my skills."

Lynch confessed he was keeping one eye on the Coleman race and Suns livewire Jack Martin said he'd love to see it happen.

"He hasn't really mentioned it too much - he doesn't speak about going out and kicking goals, he just wants to do the team thing," Martin said.

"But it would be nice for him to win that award.

"He's a great leader for the football club, he's had an outstanding year.

"If he goes out and plays his role for the team, the goals will come."
