NORTH Melbourne great Glenn Archer has agreed to join the club's board, saying his "love and affection" for the Roos made the decision easy.

Archer has been appointed as football director, taking the role held previously by Mark Brayshaw who now heads up the AFL Coaches' Association.

AFL.com.au revealed North had approached Archer about joining the board in March, and on Wednesday night the 'Shinboner of the Century' attended his first board meeting.

"I've got a real love and affection for the football club," Archer told the club's website.

"I love the footy club and I just wanted to be able to give something back.

"I'm basically the conduit between the football department, Brad Scott (senior coach) and Geoff Walsh (Director of Football) back to the board."

Archer said his role would be to support Scott as well as providing assistance with coaching, medical, fitness and the list strategy side of things.

“My job 98 per cent of the time will be supporting what Brad’s doing and hopefully taking back to the board what he’s doing and in some ways helping us improve.”

Archer played 311 games for North from 1992-2007 and was a key member of the 1996 and 1999 premiership teams, winning the Norm Smith Medal in the 1996 Grand Final.

A three-time All Australian (1996, 1998, 2002), he won the Robert Rose Award as the competition's most courageous player six times between 1998-2006, an award decided by a vote of his peers.

Archer was also named Shinboner of the Century in 2005 as the player who most personified North's never-say-die ethos.
