GEELONG superstar Gary Ablett will win his first Brownlow Medal in a grandstand finish, according to afl.com.au's Phantom Brownlow Medal.

Ablett has won the AFLPA's MVP three times but has yet to get the Brownlow, being pipped by teammates Jimmy Bartel in 2007 and by Western Bulldog Adam Cooney last year.

Ablett was equal sixth with 20 votes in 2007 and equal third in 2008 with 22 votes.

But the afl.com.au Phantom Brownlow Medal has Ablett polling a staggering 29 votes to win the 2009 medal by two from Collingwood ball-magnet Dane Swan, who has amassed more than 700 disposals this season.

Ablett and Swan have been the two standout players in the competition this season and it could come down to the final round to determine this year's winner.

In the Phantom Brownlow, Ablett and Swan are locked on 27 votes entering round 22. However, Ablett grabs two votes in round 22 for a stellar game against Fremantle while Swan misses out after the Pies were beaten by the Dogs. He finishes on 27 votes.

Expect Ablett to start with a bang and lead for much of the season, before Swan edges in front briefly. But in the latter rounds Ablett should regain the lead and shade Swan for this year's honour.

Carlton skipper Chris Judd, the 2004 Brownlow Medallist, is also right in contention for his second 'Charlie'. In this guide, he finishes third, a placing he gained in the actual 2006 Brownlow.

The form of tall timber trio – St Kilda captain Nick Riewoldt, dual Brownlow Medallist Adam Goodes and triple Brisbane Lions premiership player Jonathan Brown – should also see them feature prominently.

Goodes is a proven vote getter and will be right up there again. Could he join AFL legend Bob Skilton as a triple Brownlow Medallist for the red and white?

Riewoldt and Brown would be more than deserving recipients, but can they buck the trend of the medal being won by midfielders in recent times?

St Kilda quartet Brendon Goddard, Leigh Montagna, Nick Dal Santo and Lenny Hayes should poll well after first-class seasons. They are on target to accumulate 15 votes or more each.

Collingwood's Alan Didak and Geelong's Paul Chapman, despite injuries interrupting their seasons, had some super matches and should also gain double-figure votes.

Geelong young-gun Joel Selwood will be in the mix, as will Carlton's Marc Murphy and Hawthorn's Sam Mitchell, despite the latter two missing All-Australian selection.

Coleman Medallist Brendan Fevola and All-Australian ruckman Aaron Sandilands also had excellent seasons and should poll well.
