LUCKLESS St Kilda midfielder Nathan Freeman is setting his sights on making his AFL debut this season.

Freeman is expected to play football this week as he continues his recovery from persistent hamstring injuries.

He re-joined training with the main group this week. Freeman told AFL.com.au he wanted to play senior football in 2016.

"That's obviously the aim. At the moment, I'm ticking all the boxes," he said.

"It is tough. It's as much mental as it is physical."

Recruited by Collingwood in 2013 but yet to make his AFL debut, Freeman has twice suffered setbacks with his hamstring.

The latest came after a 46-disposal effort in the Sandringham seconds a month ago.

He was hurt again at training a fortnight later.

Saints football manager Jamie Cox said Freeman would return through the VFL reserves again.

“(He) has trained strongly now for two to three weeks," Cox told saints.com.au.

“All going well, if he gets through training again on Thursday, he’s available for selection.”

Midfielder David Armitage will be tested this week after being concussed in the last quarter of St Kilda's seven-point loss to North Melbourne.

“He had a delayed reaction to a head knock,” Cox said.

Small forward Jack Sinclair is in doubt to make the trip to play West Coast on Sunday afternoon with a corked calf.

Defender Dylan Roberton should be available for selection, while ruckman Billy Longer was concussed in the final term when playing for Sandringham and will have his fitness assessed.
