DISTURBING vision has emerged of a fight between fans at Thursday night's season opener at the MCG.

Just seconds after the final siren in Richmond's 33-point win over Carlton, a male wearing a Tigers jumper appears to throw a punch at another fan in the Great Southern Stand before a scuffle ensues.

It has been reported that the fight occurred after two groups argued over a free kick to Richmond star recruit Tom Lynch in the last quarter.

AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan slammed the violent behaviour.

"Every person that comes to our game needs to feel safe. That behaviour is clearly unacceptable and there needs to be an accountability for the individual or individuals involved for their behaviour," McLachlan said on Melbourne radio station 3AW.

"We have the power to issue banning notices and, clearly, I don't want to run ahead of it, but from what I have seen it would be hard to see how we would want that person that I saw in a Richmond jumper, and maybe there are others, coming to the football for a period of time."

An AFL spokesperson has confirmed that an investigation of the incident is on the way.

"Once identified we have provisions to ban the patrons from AFL matches who acted inappropriately," the spokesperson said.

"85,000 fans attended the match last night and the overwhelming majority of people behaved responsibly and enjoyed the game, we will not let the actions of a few take away from this."

Victoria Police provided a statement early on Friday morning in relation to the fight late in the match.

"A 19-year-old man was arrested following an alleged assault at a football match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground last night.

"It is alleged a fight broke out between a number of males inside the stadium just before 10.30pm.

"An Eltham man received an infringement notice in regards to riotous behavior of $322.

"The victims did not wish to proceed with further police action."

The AFL has been contacted for comment.

MCC's general manager of venue and event services Gerard Griffin said any decision on whether the individual would be banned from attending future matches at the MCG would be made in consultation with the AFL and Richmond Football Club.

"MCG security and Victoria Police were quickly made aware of an incident taking place between supporters in the Great Southern Stand following Thursday night's match," MCC's general manager of venue and event services Gerard Griffin said.

"Within a minute of being notified, security and police were on the scene and the man was taken outside and arrested by the police. The matter was dealt with by Victoria Police.

"The safety and security of patrons is paramount for the MCC and the actions of this individual were totally unacceptable.

"This type of behaviour is completely unacceptable and will not be tolerated at the MCG.

"We want all patrons to feel safe coming to a game of footy. Our security team will work closely with Victoria Police to quickly apprehend anyone who engages in anti-social behaviour and they will be appropriately dealt with."
