ST KILDA defender Bailey Rice will be sidelined for a month after he broke a finger in the JLT Community Series win over Carlton last Saturday.

It was the first time the 20-year-old represented the Saints in either the pre-season competition or the home and away season.

Coach Alan Richardson told St Kilda fans of the injury at the club's season launch on Friday at Moorabbin Town Hall.

"Unfortunately 'Ricey' broke his finger in the game, so he'll miss a month of footy," Richardson said.

Rice is the son of former Saint and Blue Dean. He was drafted at No. 49 in the 2015 NAB AFL Draft as a father-son selection after he opted to join St Kilda, rather than Carlton.

He played 16 matches for Sandringham in the VFL last year.
