About the Role
We are currently seeking an innovative, curious and enthusiastic Data Engineer to join the Carlton Football Club’s growing Data & Technology team, as we seek to harness data-driven strategy to drive performance both on and off the field.
This is a unique opportunity to combine your technical expertise with the passion and energy of working in an elite sporting organisation. You’ll play a pivotal role in shaping the Club’s data ecosystem, liaising with key stakeholders across the Club to build the infrastructure and pipelines that empower smarter, faster, and more informed decision-making.
The role also carries an educational component - championing best practices in data collection, secure storage, and governance, while guiding colleagues in understanding the importance of safe, responsible data use.
Continual innovation is a hallmark of the Club’s Data & Technology team – this role will be provided the opportunity to proactively explore emerging technologies, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and creative problem-solving methods to keep Carlton at the cutting edge of sports analytics.
Key Responsibilities
- Build and maintain scalable ETL/ELT data pipelines that connect diverse sources to the Club’s centralised data platform.
- Oversee and optimise the Club’s Snowflake data warehouse, including facilitation, integration and delivery of usable data to stakeholders across all functions
- Drive automation of key business functions using Python, SQL, Power Automate, and other tools to create streamlined and efficient workflows, reducing manual effort and improving productivity.
- Implement robust data governance strategies to ensure the accuracy, usability, and accessibility of key datasets, while upholding data security best practices and maintain compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Collaborate with key stakeholders across all teams providing support on data-related technical challenges, while educating colleagues on safe, secure data practices and responsible AI usage.
- Develop and maintain clear, comprehensive documentation to guide the Club’s data users in leveraging new data sources and instructing on best practices.
- Stay at the forefront of emerging technologies and AI, regularly researching trends, tools, and practices that could enhance the Club’s operations and performance.
- Contribute to the evaluation and development of AI-driven proof of concepts, helping transform innovative ideas into practical solutions.
- Collaborate with senior team members to identify opportunities for AI integration, supporting the implementation of innovative solutions to enhance productivity and decision-making across departments.
- Participate in pilot projects and technology trials, gathering feedback and documenting outcomes to inform future adoption of new tools and platforms.
- Share insights and findings with colleagues, helping to foster a culture of continuous learning and innovation around emerging technologies and AI within the Club.
Experience, Skills and Attributes
- Undergraduate degree in mathematics, statistics, computer science, or any related field and/or equivalent experience
- Previous experience working in a sporting organization is preferred, although not essential
- 2+ years of previous work experience in data engineering or analytical role(s) (or similar).
- Experience building and maintaining automated data pipelines from flat file and API-based sources, using ETL/ELT tools (Matillion, Fivetran, etc.), SQL, relevant programming languages including Python, and cloud platforms.
- Experience working with and administering data warehouses, preferably Snowflake.
- Experience with AWS cloud services and tools, such as RDS, EC2, and S3 buckets.
- Familiarity with both Mac and Windows operating systems.
- Proficiency with industry data quality standards (cleansing, validation, and governance).
- Proficiency in creating and maintaining data documentation and version control systems.
- Experience working with business intelligence/visualisation tools (e.g. Tableau, PowerBI)
- Familiarity with Atlassian products (e.g. Confluence, Jira)
- Strong communication skills and an ability to build positive working relationships with others.
- Curious, innovative thinker with a highly developed analytical ability and strong problem-solving skills.
- Highly self-motivated and proactive, with an ability to work both autonomously and collaboratively as part of a team.
- Effective time management and stakeholder management skills, with a proven ability to manage multiple competing priorities.
