The AFL has today confirmed changes to some of its healthcare guidelines and policies ahead of the 2026 Toyota AFL and NAB AFLW Premiership Seasons.

Lightning

Under the AFL Lightning Guidelines, the return-to-rooms period when lightning is detected within a 10km radius will increase from 20 minutes to 30 minutes, aligning the AFL with other major sports.

Warm-up time following a lightning delay will move to a fixed duration of:

  • Eight minutes for AFL matches; and
  • Ten minutes for AFLW matches

The extended warm-up period for AFLW recognises the limited indoor warm-up facilities at some AFLW venues.

These changes were made in consultation with lightning injury experts and clubs, and were implemented during last week’s AAMI Community Series.

Heat

Following recommendations from heat experts, the AFL Heat Guidelines have been updated to include a new introductory section outlining the key club officials involved in the prevention of heat-related illness. The update reinforces that responsibility extends beyond club doctors to the broader healthcare and high-performance teams.

The guidelines now also include information regarding the ideal temperature of cold-water immersion, with an emphasis on early implementation of active cooling measures.

AFL Executive General Manager of Football Operations Laura Kane said the updates reflect the League's ongoing commitment to the health and safety of all players.

"The health and safety of our players is our top priority, and these changes reinforce that commitment," Kane said.

"We regularly review and update our guidelines to ensure they reflect the latest medical and scientific advice, so we can continue to provide the safest possible environment for everyone involved in the game."

The 2026 Toyota AFL Premiership Season begins this week with Opening Round matches from Thursday, 5 March.
