Two NAB League Girls graduates have been confirmed as Father-Daughter selections at the upcoming NAB AFL Women’s Draft on October 22.

Western Jets playmaker Isabella Grant (pictured, right) will be selected by the Western Bulldogs and 2019 Murray Bushrangers captain Millie Brown (pictured, left) by the Geelong Cats, with both AFLW clubs matching bids from multiple other clubs in order to secure the 18-year-olds.

Grant’s father Chris played 341 AFL games for the Bulldogs from 1990-2007 and is a member of the Australian Football Hall of Fame, while Brown’s father Paul played 84 AFL games for Geelong from 1990-98. Players can be nominated as Father-Daughter selections by AFLW clubs if their father played at least one AFL match for that club.

Grant averaged 17 disposals and three tackles per game in six NAB League Girls matches for the Jets earlier this year, before representing Vic Metro in the NAB AFLW Under-18 Championships and later earning NAB League Girls Team of the Year honours.

She said it was “a bit weird” going through her junior career with a famous football surname but hasn’t taken for granted her opportunities in the sport to date.

“I think my family will just be happy with me being me and me being happy with whatever I’m doing,” Grant said in July at the AFLW Under-18 Championships.

“If you’re surrounded by people who support and trust you and if you have the goal of constantly improving rather than just getting drafted, I think that really helps your mindset.

“It’s the understanding that if I try my best and make the most of every opportunity then I’ll be satisfied no matter what eventuates.”

Brown, meanwhile, averaged 22 disposals and four rebound-50s per game across seven outings in Murray’s back line this year. She was named in the 2019 NAB League Girls Team of the Year and also in the NAB AFLW Under-18 All Australian Team following her performances for Vic Country at the 2019 AFLW Under-18 Championships.

Brown also appeared in three Swisse Wellness VFL Women’s games for the Cats late in the season.

The final draft selection numbers for both players will be revealed when they’re formally listed at the AFLW Draft.

The first AFLW Father-Daughter selection was made last year when former Sandringham Dragons player Abbie McKay was nominated by Carlton, where her father Andrew played 244 AFL games from 1993-2003.
