What the club says
"We've got a strict criteria in terms of the type of people we want to bring in to the club, so their character level, as well as their competitiveness – and their talent level – was the basic philosophy. Having picked up Stewie Crameri and Sam Darley in the trade period, we were quite happy to go with some younger players and Matt Fuller, as a 23-year-old, was a guy we identified pretty early in the season." – Simon Dalrymple, Western Bulldogs recruiting manager

Pick 4 – Marcus Bontempelli
"We think that his ability to win his own ball, his decision making with ball in hand – combined with his athletic abilities and his size – will make him really difficult to play against. He's been on the radar since last year when he won an AIS scholarship and his footy last year was pretty good. But he went to the next level this year. His rate of improvement from the start of the year to the end of the season is something that I haven't seen in my 15 years or so of watching TAC Cup footy" - Simon Dalrymple

Pick 42 – Matthew Fuller
"He's a 23-year-old premiership player from Norwood who kicked a lot of goals from outside 50 this year. He's super keen to make it to AFL after having to wait a bit longer than most and we see, once he adapts to the full-time training load, that he'll be a really good player for us." - Simon Dalrymple

Pick 60 – Mitch Honeychurch
"He's a competitive, full of energy player, who can play forward and through the midfield. At that pick, we wanted competitiveness. His numbers, contested wise, were terrific and what you're looking for in the smaller type players is competitive spirit. And we've seen that in Mitch." - Simon Dalrymple

Pick 84 – Brett Goodes (promoted rookie)
