BRISBANE Lions captain Tom Rockliff has suffered concussion and a sore jaw in a first quarter incident involving Gold Coast defender Steven May.

In the opening minutes of Saturday's QClash, Rockliff was chasing a ball in the Lions' forward 50 when May hit him with his left shoulder.

The point of impact was difficult to determine, but Rockliff was out cold when he hit the ground.

Play was stopped while the skipper was stretchered off to undergo the concussion test – which he later failed and Rohan Bewick was subbed on.

Rockliff also reported having a sore jaw.

It continues a rough start to the season for Rockliff, who missed two matches after suffering broken ribs and a punctured lung in the opening round against Collingwood.

Gold Coast small forward Jarrod Garlett has also been subbed out in the opening quarter with an ankle injury.
