ADELAIDE should take a chance on experienced Fremantle midfielder Michael Barlow to bolster its engine room after missing out on Bryce Gibbs, former Port Adelaide captain Kane Cornes says.

The Dockers are expected to decide this week if they will cut Barlow or offer the 28-year-old veteran of 126 games a new contract.

Cornes believes Barlow would be a solid addition for the Crows after averaging 24.5 possessions in 13 games for the Dockers this year.

"Scott Thompson is 34 when round one starts next year, Brad Crouch has probably averaged 10 games a year over his career with injuries, Rory Sloane is a star and Matt Crouch is a solid footballer, but apart from that if they get injuries I think they are in real trouble," Cornes told radio station 5AA on Sunday.

"Barlow could be a delisted free agent.

"If it goes that way, as we think it will, I think he is the best pick out there for the Crows."

The Dockers will need to delist one more player if they use more than three picks in next month's NAB AFL Draft.

Fremantle has picks seven, 35, 40, 71, 79, 97, 115 and 133.

Barlow and defender Alex Silvagni are the most likely to make way.

The Dockers had a busy NAB AFL Trade Period, adding Cam McCarthy (Greater Western Sydney), Shane Kersten (Geelong), Joel Hamling (Western Bulldogs) and Brad Hill (Hawthorn).

They have already lost or delisted seven players off their primary list for next season.

Barlow could be a perfect fit for a Crows team that traded Jarryd Lyons to Gold Coast and failed to secure Gibbs in a deal with Carlton.

Barlow had a massive 43-possession game for the Dockers in their round 13 upset of the Power where he got the better of Robbie Gray.

Meanwhile, AFL.com.au understands the Crows are close to finalising a contract extension for young key forward Harry Dear.

The 20-year-old was the 58th overall pick in the 2014 draft and showed promising signs in the SANFL this year.

Dear has had to bide his time behind captain Taylor Walker, Josh Jenkins, Tom Lynch and Mitch McGovern, but is seen as a quality long-term prospect.
