THE AFL is happy with AFLX's debut, but will look at ways to create more contests in the unique format.

A healthy crowd of 10,253 watched Adelaide defeat Geelong to win inaugural AFLX tournament at Hindmarsh Stadium on Thursday night.

While the League was happy with the spectacle and interest in the matches, AFLX project manager David Stevenson said the open nature of games could see the rules tinkered with.

Matches involving other clubs with be held in Melbourne on Friday night and Sydney on Saturday evening.

AFLX Thursday wrap: How each club fared

"I think across the whole night there was four or five ball-ups which was pretty interesting," Stevenson told SEN on Friday.

"That's one of the things we would look at, would we have more players on (the field), eight or nine, to create a few more contests?

"There wasn't a lot of high marking, so they're all the things that come next week (in review).

"We'll do a post-mortem this morning, but overall based on what on the field, on the crowd numbers, on how the broadcast looked, we feel pretty good."

The free-to-air broadcast on 7TWO across the country had an average audience of 171,000 viewers, with a total reach of 643,000.

The three-and-a-half-hour broadcast also had 82,000 viewers on Fox Footy.

Despite being a shortened form of the game, the telecast was actually longer than the standard three-hour window for a regular AFL game.

While the games were fast-paced and exciting, a lack of star power was evident, with many big names not selected or withdrawing in the lead up.

Stevenson said the League had not pressured clubs to play its stars so the competition would have bigger drawcards.

"No, we didn't, and we certainly could have gone down that route," he said.

"We didn't put any pressure on them at all, and we generally had really strong support from across the clubs, and a couple of coaches came out in strong support.

"One of the most important groups we want to make sure this works for is the players and clubs.

"Like any pre-season game you're going to have some of the established stars and the emerging talent like we saw last night, but there was no specific direction to the clubs."
