PREMIERSHIP Hawthorn swingman Ryan Schoenmakers has retired.

The 28-year-old lined up in 121 games throughout his career and was part of the 2015 flag side, the final premiership in the Hawks' three-peat.

Schoenmakers didn't feature in the senior side this season and only once did he manage more than 16 games in a year, in 2012.

An Achilles issue has plagued Schoenmakers over the past two seasons.

The Hawks brought in Jonathon Patton and Sam Frost from Greater Western Sydney and Melbourne respectively over the Telstra AFL Trade Period, adding to their stock of talls.

Schoenmakers was drafted with pick No.16 in 2008.

"I have spent almost half my life at this football club and have made some incredible friendships along the way," Schoenmakers told hawthornfc.com.au.

"My football journey hasn't been without its challenges, but each hurdle has helped shape me into the person I am today.

"The last 12 months in particular have been difficult on the injury front, which has helped me come to the decision that it’s time to pursue the next step in my career."

Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson paid tribute to Schoenmakers.

"Schoey has been an incredible servant of the brown and gold," Clarkson said.

"He is a terrific clubman who's held in high regard by his teammates and he'll certainly be missed.

It comes after Kaiden Brand, David Mirra, Teia Miles and Darren Minchington were delisted on Thursday, while Tim Mohr retired.
