Several of North Melbourne's young stars experienced training of a different kind on Tuesday as they had a stab at fencing.

Competition was fierce among teammates, a customary salute followed quickly by three minutes of rigorous battle with the foils slashing wildly as each player tried to prove their dominance on the piste.

It might have looked like fun and games, but several physical and mental benefits can be gained from fencing.

The Victorian State Fencing Centre is housed within the new Arden Street facility and players only had to walk a short distance to get to the cross training destination.

"Fencing has a strong focus on balance, stability and speed which is pivotal in the modern game. The constant changing of direction is also something that is very beneficial to our players," North development manager Jon Haines told kangaroos.com.au.
