Somerville Secondary College Year 11 VCAL students, along with the help of the St Kilda Football Club, was able to invite disadvantaged students from Sacred Heart School in Fitzroy for a fun filled day at Somerville Secondary College which included a BBQ, games, activities and a trip to the local beach.
The relationship between the schools flourished after the VCAL students began a program called ‘Community Connectedness’, whereby the students explored all aspects of community involvement and challenged them to examine their attitudes to a range of issues that impact on the lives of Australian society.
The ultimate goal of the program was to ensure the children involved became valuable contributors in their own communities. Sacred Heart School is heavily involved with the Brotherhood of St Laurence, which is where the two schools first met. After both participated in an Urban Camp at the Brotherhood, the VCAL students were so humbled they wanted to do something to help out the multicultural school with a large majority of Sudanese refugee students.
Somerville students were struggling to raise the money they intended to, but with the help of a signed 2011 St Kilda Guernsey that went to auction courtesy of the Club, their event went ahead as planned.
Furthermore, St Kilda Football Club donated packs for the Grade 4 and 5 students from Sacred Heart which included a cap, scarf, puzzle and footy.
The Club was more than happy to help out such a worthy cause and is hoping to have several more St Kilda supporters running around in the Fitzroy area.
