WHEN is a set shot play-on?

Several times on Friday night, Hawks superstar Lance 'Buddy' Franklin took a sharp deviation to his left before kicking.

So in the second half, the Magpies stationed a man to run at Buddy as soon as he moved off his line – a tactic sure to spark wide debate as to when the player kicking for goal has played on.

Because a ball kicked from outside the boundary or after the siren is called dead if the player plays on, which includes moving off his direct line to goal, expect the act and the leeway from the umpires to be scrutinised.

However, Franklin dismissed concerns about his kicking action and style, despite having 15 shots at goal for his eight majors.

"I've got my natural kicking style – there's no point changing it, is there?" he posed after the match.

"It was alright. I ended up kicking eight, which was pleasing, but some set shots ... I've got to do a little bit of work on during the week again.

"I'll keep working on it.

"If I'm kicking the goals, and the points are still there and we're winning, I've got no problem with it to be honest.

"I'd rather [kick] the ones from the boundary – there's less pressure on them."

The forward added that he's not concerned about trying to kick 100 goals in the home and away season.

Franklin's 8.6 moved him to 85 with four matches to come before the finals, and he's 10 goals clear of Carlton's Brendan Fevola in the race for the Coleman Medal.

Club legend Jason Dunstall was the last Hawk to kick 100 goals, but Franklin said it was a non-issue for him.

"To be honest, I haven't thought about that at all," he said. "I'm just playing every game on its merits, and just keep playing consistent football, and if that comes, it comes."

Hawthorn's midfield was terrific again, and Franklin said it made the job a lot easier for him and fellow target Jarryd Roughead.

"Some of the midfield entries to me and all the other forwards was exceptional tonight," he said.

"With Hodgey (Luke Hodge), (Sam) Mitchell, (Jordan) Lewis and those other midfielders, you can't complain with the way the ball's being delivered to you."
