Gaff, a smooth-moving left footer from the Oakleigh Chargers, appears almost certain to be heading to West Coast with the No.4 picks in Thursday evening's draft.
However he says he has had no assurances from any club, and will be on tenterhooks until he knows his fate.
"There's no assurances," Gaff said from the Gold Coast just hours before the draft.
"Clubs keep their cards pretty close to their chest, especially with the Gold Coast having so many picks, who knows what could happen?
"Nothing's a certainty at this time of year."
A phone call on Wednesday night from two-time AFL premiership captain Tom Harley, who mentored the midfielder during his time with the AIS/AFL Academy, did help put his mind at ease.
"He's a great man, Tom," Gaff said.
"I've learned so much from him, from his experiences as a premiership captain at Geelong.
"He just said to be myself and to not take it all too seriously and to enjoy the night and whatever happens from there ... he's been super [for me].
Gaff said he would enjoy moving interstate should it eventuate, with the Vic Metro star seeing it as a chance to further develop as a person.
Another young gun who could be packing his bags is Dandenong Stingrays tall Tom Lynch.
He, too, admitted to apprehension as the minutes ticked down until he joined an AFL club, although with draft experts less certain of his destination he will have to play the waiting game.
"I'm not sure [where I'll go], maybe Gold Coast," Lynch said.
"It's hard to say. [It'd be] pretty daunting walking in if Gary Ablett's there."
AFL national talent manager Kevin Sheehan said talk of highly-rated Gippsland youngster Dyson Heppell sliding had surprised him.
"There is some talk of that, but gee I saw a game where he had 40 possessions and stood on their shoulders and won the game [for his side]," Sheehan said.
"He had a brilliant year, so I think that any little hiccup is going to be a minor setback and something that won't stop him playing a couple of hundred games ... he's an elite young player."
And while Sheehan believes there is likely to be 50 to 60 certainties selected on Thursday night, one or two may surprise.
"I've had the coat-pullers telling me to do some research on player x, y and z, so we'd expect there to be a few surprises late."
