In difficult conditions at Shepley Oval the Scorpions recorded their fourth consecutive victory for the season to consolidate 2nd spot on the VFL ladder. Led by experienced Saints players Mathew Capuano and Brett Voss the home side jumped out of the blocks with five goals to none in the first term. The Scorpions defence was rebounding the ball magnificently with Matt Maguire, Matt Ferguson, Allan Murray and veteran Jason Caples easily eclipsing their opponents. Up forward the dangerous Josh Houlihan was causing the Werribee defence problems whilst the Schwarze brothers were using their speed and spring to advantage. As the rain came down in the second term the Werribee side worked its way back into the match. Some strong marking by Ben Schwarze in the third quarter proved crucial in swinging the momentum back to the Scorpions as they took a 16 point lead into the final change. Six goals to four in the final term was brought about largely to the efforts of Capuano in the middle who worked relentlessly to gather 15 marks and kick two telling goals. Voss, with a couple of key marks at critical stages and 29 disposals, was also a key contributor whilst rookie Allan Murray continues to impress as a smart user of the football across half back. His 21 disposals were highlighted by another nine marks in a strong aerial display. Youngster Matt Ferguson didn't find as much of the football as he has in previous weeks but played an important role in the nullifying of key Werribee forward David Mitchell.

The Scorpions now tackle Frankston at Shepley Oval this Sunday before running into competition leader Port Melbourne the following week at TEAC Oval. Listed Saint Chris Oliver should return from his one match suspension whilst captain Steve Harrison will need to be tested after missing through injury. Young Saint Leigh Fisher will also be pressing for selection in the senior Springvale side after being the best player in the early match.
