COLLINGWOOD defender Heath Shaw believes "anything is possible" for the Magpies, after resetting the competition benchmark for intensity against Geelong last Friday night.
After nearly beating the Cats twice in 2007, the Magpies handed the reigning premiers their first loss since round 21 last year due to what Shaw called "four quarters of football with the pressure on".
This week, Collingwood faces a West Coast side buoyed by its recent 50-point win over the fourth-placed Adelaide at the MCG on Saturday.
Shaw said the Pies will also take heart from another performance from last year - the thrilling extra-time victory over the Eagles in the semi-final that set up their preliminary final showdown with Geelong – when entering the match.
"It was one of the best wins I've been involved in," Shaw said. "It was a different situation playing extra time and getting into a prelim final.
"But we took a lot of confidence from that and it's two different teams compared to last year … hopefully we can maintain that pressure and intensity we showed on the weekend."
Shaw said the win over the Cats will give the players confidence as they work towards their goal of a third straight finals campaign.
"We expect to play finals and that's what we want to do, but you have to have wins on the board to play finals," he said.
"Last week against St Kilda, we took one step forward and this week with Geelong, we've taken another step.
"Hopefully we can continue that for the rest of the year."
Shaw predicted a tough and hard-hitting encounter against the Eagles, after the 13th-placed side notched up its second win for the season on the weekend.
He also said the Magpies will have to look at their opposition's list closely this week, with a number of key Eagles no longer at the club.
"West Coast had a good win on the weekend as well, and their pressure on Adelaide was similar to ours on Geelong. So it's going to be a pretty hard and tough game, but we hope that we can continue on from last week," he said.
"There are a few guys that are new and we'll have to do our homework throughout the week and have a good look at those players, because they've obviously played pretty well on the weekend.
"We have to make sure we're ready for anything."
