Farmer showed the form that saw him earn an AFL debut in Round 18, with great rebound from half back and accurate use by foot. Farmer will this weekend be hoping to help Sturt avoid a straight sets exit from the SANFL finals, when they face Norwood in the first semi-final on Sunday at Adelaide Oval.
The award, which is judged by Power development coaches, Daniel Healy and Darren Trevena, is announced exclusively at PortAdelaideFC.com.au each week.
Farmer held off strong opposition from the likes of Ryan Williams and Matthew Westhoff to take this week’s award. Here’s the full wrap…
Cibo Glenelg SANFL Player of the Week
Mitch Farmer (for Sturt v Central at Adelaide Oval) – Another good game from Mitch. He ran off the half back line well and provided plenty of link up play for Sturt. He also showed he’s got footy smarts, positioning himself well to earn a number of free kicks. Used the ball well with his 12 kicks and 8 handballs.
Fabian Deluca (for Sturt v Central at Adelaide Oval) – Not quite up to his normal standards but still managed to win 16 hitouts. He got hands to the ball a number of times but the stronger bodied McKenzie made it hard for him all day.
Adam Thomson (for Sturt v Central at Adelaide Oval) – Thommo wasn’t as potent as he usually is, but still managed to get forward for a goal. He was carrying a bit of a niggling injury into the game but got through unscathed. Struggled a bit around stoppages because the Bulldogs were marking him tightly.
Jonathon Giles (for Central v Sturt at Adelaide Oval) – A solid game without being spectacular. Went up forward and took a couple of marks and had a shot on goal from a tight angle that could have sealed the game for them. Had 9 hitouts, 5 possessions and 5 marks.
Ryan Williams (for Central v Sturt at Adelaide Oval) – Played on half back and got beaten early by Gum, but got himself back into the game in the second half. Finished with 18 possessions and used the ball well after a slow start. Was around the mark in Central District’s best.
Matt Westhoff (for Central v Sturt at Adelaide Oval) – Matty was lively up forward and looked dangerous despite the fact that it was a difficult day for forwards with both sides putting numbers behind the ball. Had to work hard for his kicks and could have been man of the match had he been able to kick straighter. Finished with 1.4, but to have 5 scoring shots in a final shows how far Matty has developed this year. 9 kicks, 8 marks and made another 10 marking contests.
Adam Cockshell (for Norwood v Port at Adelaide Oval) – Played in the ruck and up forward and had a good impact on the game. Used his body well and kicked a late goal when Port were surging. Back to the form he had earlier in the season.
Gavin Grose (for North reserves v Eagles reserves) – Gav played in defense in North’s reserves’ loss to the Eagles. He ran, marked and spoiled well and was among North’s best players.
