THE BRISBANE Lions have bolstered their recruiting department by adding former Fitzroy star Leon Harris as a consultant ahead of the 2017 season.

Just days after Peter Schwab stepped aside as the club's list chief to accept a role as the AFL's national umpiring director, Harris has been added to the team.

The Lions are yet to name a replacement for Schwab's role and it might not come until the New Year.

Harris played 186 games for Fitzroy and was runner-up in the Lions' best and fairest in 1987.

He has a strong background in junior football, leading the Victoria Country talent programs for 10 years as a coach and 10 years as a high performance manager.

Lions general manager of football David Noble said this was a key reason behind Harris' appointment.

"We feel his experience in this area will add significantly to the Lions' recruiting team," Noble said.

"In addition he is a former champion player with the club and brings his passion for the Lions and a desire to see the club once more become a power in the AFL."
