COLLINGWOOD midfielder Dayne Beams is set to miss up to another fortnight with the quad injury that kept him out of Sunday's win over North Melbourne.

The Magpies star was a late withdrawal from the match after injuring himself at training on Saturday, along with ill half-back Heath Shaw.

Shaw has been cleared to return to face Carlton in round two, while Ben Reid (cut mouth) and Ben Johnson (corked thigh), who were both hurt during the Kangaroos clash, will also be available, according to the club's website.

Beams, the 2012 club best and fairest winner, is listed as one to two weeks away.

Meanwhile, small forward Alex Fasolo is likely to make his return from injury in the VFL on Saturday when the Magpies take on North Ballarat at Victoria Park.

Fasolo played well in the club's first intra-club practice match back in February, but has not appeared since after suffering a hamstring injury.

Collingwood has taken a cautious approach with the 20-year-old and he still has to get through the club's main training session on Thursday to be certain of selection.

The club's director of football Geoff Walsh said if Fasolo completed that training session successfully, he would play in the VFL.

Fasolo told AFL.com.au's Gen Y Footy that he needed to return through the VFL before being considered for selection in the senior team.

"[The] likelihood is I'll probably play in the VFL and get some fitness under my belt," Fasolo said.

Other players in line to return at some level this weekend after pre-season layoffs include Alan Didak (hamstring), Paul Seedsman (hamstring) and Clinton Young (calf).

Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley has indicated the Magpies will not play players in the AFL who have not had the necessary preparation to handle the intensity of the early rounds.

He said the club has confidence in the depth of its list and will only select players who are fully fit and prepared.

Alex Fasolo is a forward in NAB AFL Fantasy. He is valued at $373,900 in 2013. Register your team at our AFL Fantasy Hub.
