BRENDAN Fevola's heel is slowing improving and Carlton fans can also relax about Bryce Gibbs – he doesn't have a broken thumb.

The Blues' midfielder was seen clutching a thumb during his team's heart-breaking loss to Essendon on Saturday night but Carlton footy manager Steven Icke says the young star has been cleared of a fracture.

"Bryce is fine, we'd expect Bryce to play [against the Swans this week]" Icke told afl.com.au on Monday.

"He sprained his thumb but he'll get it strapped up and play. He's had it x-rayed and there's no break."

Gibbs was relatively subdued throughout the Blues' four-point loss to the Bombers on a night when Brett Ratten's side was left to rue some wasted chances in front of goal.

Among the most culpable was the usually-reliable Fevola.

The star forward is slowly recovering from a bruised heel and Icke said the club's leading goalkicker was likely to improve as the season progressed.

"Every week it's getting better," he said.

"We'd expect it to be better [again] this week and for him to train a fair part this week."

Fevola booted 4.7 against Essendon and said his injury had limited his ability to fine-tune his skills during the week.

"I haven't done too much goalkicking practice in the past month because I haven't been out on the track, so I have just got to try to get myself on the track and try to start kicking straighter," he told the Nine Network.

"My heel is pretty sore but if you put yourself out there to play you are 100 per cent fit.

"I've just got to kick straighter."
