WEST Coast will try to secure coach Adam Simpson on a long-term contract extension over the summer following a successful run to the Grand Final, chief executive Trevor Nisbett says.

Simpson is contracted until the end of the 2016 season. He signed a two-year deal when he was appointed at the end of 2013 with a one-year extension option for 2016, which was triggered at the end of last season.

But Nisbett said he would sit down with Simpson and his management over the summer to discuss his contract.

"We'll speak to Adam and his management over the summer first to see where they are at because obviously it is a two-way street," Nisbett said on Monday.

"Speaking to Adam over the past 12 months, he is very confident in the decision he has made to come to Perth.

"He is pretty happy and the kids have settled so I think it would be a good move if we can cement a longer-term tenure than just the 12 months ahead.

"So we'll look at that over the summer."

Nisbett also endorsed assistant coach Don Pyke to take part in the formal interview process for the senior coaching job with Adelaide.

"I am sure Don will now put his hat in the ring to see how that goes," Nisbett said.

"He has not been in a formal process for a senior position so it will be a first for Don and we wish him well if he chooses to go down that path because he's been outstanding with us and he's an outstanding bloke."

Pyke has emerged as a contender for the job but has been tied up with the Eagles' premiership tilt until now.

He was an assistant coach at the Crows in 2005 and 2006 under Neil Craig.

He has been the Eagles' strategy, stoppage and structures coach over the past two seasons under Simpson.

Nisbett said he was not surprised to see former Eagles coach John Worsfold appointed as Essendon coach on Monday.

"I think he's the right guy for the job," Nisbett said.

"I guess his experience will really help him after 12 years with us and he's a quality person. So he'll get on with it straight away and do a really good job at Essendon."
