Southport has named 13 members of its 2022 grand final team for its first practice match of the season against Brisbane Lions at Brighton Homes Arena on Friday night.

The Sharks are looking like premiership contenders again despite the departures of key players such as Billy Gowers and Jacob Townsend, with two of the best three players in the competition in Jacob Dawson and Boyd Woodcock ready to go again.

Fellow former AFL-listed players Zac Foot, Max Spencer, Mackenzie Willis, Tom Fields, Jay Lockhart, Brayden Crossley and Jesse Joyce are also playing, plus ex-AFL recruits Matt Conroy, Matt McGuinness and Jackson Edwards.

The Lions have named 26 players, with fans to get a first look at father-son selection Jaspa Fletcher, while Kai Lohmann, James Madden, Darcy Fort and Noah Answerth also come in. Rhys Mathieson, Jaxon Prior and Jimmy Tunstill among the exclusions.

Essendon has selected nine AFL-listed players in its 27 for its Friday morning game against Sandringham at NEC Hangar, which will field six St Kilda men in its 25.

The Bombers will field draftees Lewis Hayes and Rhett Montgomerie, plus key VFL recruits Brad Lynch, Tom Phillips, Jack Cleaver and Tom Wallis, while former Port Melbourne pair Josh Hotchkin and Harry Minton-Connell have also been named.

Nick Coffield is the key inclusion for the Zebras alongside draftee James Van Es, skipper Anthony Seaton and recruits Noah Gown, Isaac Wallace and Mason Hawkins.
