The squads are in for Saturday’s Smithy’s VFL practice matches.
This weekend's action is highlighted by a triple-header at Highgate Recreation Reserve featuring the competition’s six Victorian standalone clubs.
Williamstown has rolled out the big guns for its second practice match of the Smithy’s VFL pre-season, with no less than eight stars coming in for the contest with Northern Bullants on Saturday morning.
Coming off a 16-point win over Port Melbourne last week, the Seagulls have included legend Ben Jolley for his comeback match in blue and gold.
Captain Cam Polson, Jake Greiser, Jason Pongracic, Joel Ottavi, Fin O’Dwyer, Darby Henderson and Toby Triffett have also been named, with Corey Preston and Harry Jones the only automatic best 23 selections having a week off.
The Bullants have sliced their squad, naming 24 players after selecting 43 against Coburg last week. Liam Kolar and recruit Tyson Young come in, while 21 players drop out, including Josiah Kyle, Nathan Honey and Ryan Gardner.
Werribee has named a strong team for its clash with Frankston in the second game at Highgate. Dual Liston medallist Tom Gribble, co-captain Dom Brew, Nick Hayes, Hudson Garoni, Jack Boyd, Kye Declase, Jack Henderson, Sam Conway, Nathan Cooper and Bior Malual will all suit up.
The Dolphins have also rolled out a strong team despite the absence of new co-captain Will Fordham (knee). Fellow skipper Trent Mynott, Jackson Voss, Bailey Lambert, Jimmy Rendell, prized signing Mitch Szybkowski and rucks Nick Minchin, Tom Roberts and Austin Bradtke are all set to play.
Coburg has also had to slice its squad to take on Port Melbourne, with Charlie Beasley to play his first game for the club and Max Thompson also included, with Jhye Baddeley-Kelly, Nathan Boucher and Tom McKenzie among the 20 players to miss from last week’s loss to the Bullants.
The Borough has made seven changes to the team that lost to Williamstown, with Paul Hunter, Nash Holmes, Jackson Weidemann and Jack Johnston to all make their first appearances of the year.
Dylan Clarke, Nick Burke and recruits Cody Henness, Jordan Lane and Zach Walter are among those to miss out.
Footscray has named a powerful team to take on North Melbourne at IKON Park, with Jason Johannisen, Josh Bruce, Rhylee West, Robbie McComb, Jordon Sweet, Riley Garcia, Buku Khamis and recruits Oskar Baker, Caleb Poulter and Harvey Gallagher all playing.
The Kangaroos haven’t missed on star power either, with Jaidyn Stephenson, Hugh Greenwood, Aidan Corr, Callum Coleman-Jones, Lachie Young and father-son recruit Cooper Harvey all to pull on the blue and white guernsey.
Gold Coast will use GWS’s VFL-listed players as top-ups for its Saturday morning clash with the Giants, but the Suns will still have plenty of quality in their AFL-listers.
Frosty Miller medallist Chris Burgess, fellow forwards Alex Sexton and Sam Day, defender Mac Andrew and recruits Jed Anderson, Connor Blakely and Brodie McLaughlin will all play for the visitors at Blacktown.
The Giants, however, have a formidable line-up featuring former captain Phil Davis, No.1 draft pick Aaron Cadman, Harry Perryman, Adam Kennedy, Leek Aleer, Jake Riccardi and Lachie Keeffe.
Michael Hibberd, Adam Tomlinson, top draft pick Matt Jefferson, Jacob van Rooyen and recruit Josh Schache will all line-up for Casey Demons against Richmond at Casey Fields, but there will be just eight premiership players running out.
The Tigers have named AFL Grand Final sprint winner Hugo Ralphsmith, Ben Miller, Rhyan Mansell, Tyler Sonsie, skipper Lachlan Street and Bullants recruit Mutaz El Nour in their squad of 25.
The Giants v Suns and Demons v Tigers games are AFL curtain-raisers, while the Bulldogs v Kangaroos clash is an AFL curtain closer, so there is plenty of footy for fans to take in.
