PORT Adelaide's coaching panel is searching for answers to on-field inconsistency which is cruelling the club's start to the season.

The Power, with a 1-2 win-loss record, have conceded 39 goals in consecutive defeats to Collingwood and arch-rivals Adelaide.

But assistant coach Josh Carr says defensive frailties are just one area letting the Power down.

"You have got to be consistent in all phases of the game," Carr said on Monday.

"And that starts at the contest, you have got to be hard to score against defensively, and you have got to kick goals.

"There's an element in each area that we have got to improve ... I don't think we can point the finger at one area."

Carr said there was "plenty to unpack" from the 31-point loss to Adelaide when the Crows booted the last six goals.

"Everyone at the game could see that defensively throughout the whole game we probably didn't defend that well as a team," he said.

"And then in crucial moments within the game, that's not just the last quarter, right through the game we had lapses.

"It has got to be addressed and we have obviously got to be better - and that's all areas of our game - to make sure that we close the gap between our consistent and inconsistent moments."

But Carr warned against over-reacting ahead of a trip to Sydney to meet the Swans on Saturday night, saying coach Ken Hinkley would take a measured approach.

"Ken, he's coaching well, he's staying in the moment and looking to improve," he said.

"Every time we come in on a Monday, whether it's win or lose, it's how can we get better.

"I'm really confident in us as a team that we're pushing the right things ... we just haven't quite nailed it with our consistency.

"But it's round three. I am really confident we will get it right."
