HAWTHORN has been given an official warning from the AFL for the late replacement of ruckman Brent Renouf against North Melbourne last Sunday.

Renouf was named when the Hawks submitted their team sheets 90 minutes before the game was scheduled to start, but because of illness was still replaced in the side by Jarrod Kayler-Thomson.

The AFL released a statement on Thursday saying it had received an explanation and a detailed medical report from Hawthorn regarding its decision.

After investigating the incident the AFL found that Hawthorn "did not act for tactical reasons", but was "was not in compliance with guidelines issued by the AFL".

AFL football operations manager Adrian Anderson said Hawthorn received an official warning and all clubs had been notified that it was incumbent upon them not to name players with pre-existing injuries or illness in the final team, 90 minutes before the match.

Hawthorn has selected Renouf for Saturday night's clash with Essendon.
