ROSS Lyon has refused to discuss the vacant Melbourne coaching job he has been strongly linked to.

The Saints coach was backed into a $2 favourite for the position amid speculation he was the man the Demons were targeting.

On Monday night Melbourne interim football director Garry Lyon refused to confirm or deny the club's interest in the St Kilda coach.

At a press conference on Tuesday morning, Lyon said his focus was on St Kilda's coming finals series.

"Let me clear it up for everyone in the room. My position hasn't changed. Like Mick Malthouse, I don't deal in rumour and innuendo. And certainly I am committed as I have ever been to my role and my status hasn't changed one iota. I think that answers it for everybody."

Lyon even joked that Sydney Swans CEO Andrew Ireland could be behind the latest wave of speculation linking him to the Demons job.

"I think Andrew Ireland is good mates with (journalist) Mike Sheahan. Maybe they want a distraction for the Swannies. Maybe you want to follow that up," he said.

Saints captain Nick Riewoldt said he was hopeful Lyon would stay with the club but also said he would not be distracted from the task at hand.

"I certainly hope so. He's a fantastic coach and outside that, I am the same as Ross, not willing to speculate or deal in the rumours," Riewoldt said.

"I think everyone's got to respect that we've got a big game this week and any suggestion that we'd be distracted by what people are saying externally regarding Ross' future is totally right off the mark. Everyone's totally focused from the coach down on this week beating Sydney."

The Saints take on the Swans just three weeks after losing to them at ANZ Stadium.

With this week's elimination final to be held at Etihad Stadium, the Saints hold some home ground advantage but Lyon warned that his opponents had proven in the recent win over Geelong that they weren't fazed by having to hit the road.

"They've got a great record interstate, if you look at them. They'll be cock-a-hoop. They've gone down to Kardinia Park and done what no one's done in 50 weeks or whatever it is so I don't think they'll fear coming down to Etihad and they put on a great display against Essendon," he said.

"It's going to be a cracker, there's no doubt about that, it's going to be fierce, it's going to be on and it's going to go down to the last second. That's what we're preparing for."
