All the teams for Round 21 of the Smithy’s VFL.

AFL recruiters will get another chance to have a look at the teenage prodigy touted as the best ruckman in this year’s draft pool when boom Gold Coast Academy youngster Ethan Read makes his Smithy’s VFL debut for the Suns against Sydney on Saturday.

The Palm Beach-Currumbin product averaged 22 disposals, eight marks and 13 hitouts for the Allies at the National Championships and 20 touches, six marks, 20 hitouts and four clearances for the Suns Academy in the Coates Talent League.

Read comes into the VFL team alongside Jared Eckersley, with Sam Day promoted for his 150th AFL match.

Sydney also has an Academy debutant, with UNSW-Eastern Suburbs’ Ned Hawkins to play his first game, with key defender Lewis Melican back from a hamstring injury and Ryan Clarke returning from the AFL team.

GWV Rebels midfielder and Australia U18 captain George Stevens will play his second VFL game for Geelong when they take on Collingwood at Victoria Park on Saturday.

Stevens, who turned 18 on Thursday, picked up 16 touches on debut against Coburg in Round 6 before averaging 19.3 disposals and 6.3 tackles for Victoria Country at the National Champs and 29.8 possessions, 4.3 tackles and 6.7 clearances in nine games for the Rebels.

Luckless Cat Flynn Kroeger will play just his second game for the club after a horror run with injury. Kroeger managed just one VFL game in his debut season last year due to a broken wrist and hasn’t played so far this season with a hip injury.

Geelong will be short on tall timber though, with Shannon Neale and Esava Ratugolea promoted and Jon Ceglar injured, while Tom Feely will miss with concussion.

Collingwood has regained spring-heeled forward Ash Johnson from AFL duties and ball winners Fin Macrae and Josh Carmichael from injury, with Jack Ginnivan and Will Hoskin-Elliott going up.

Sam Philp will make a welcome return from injury for Carlton’s crucial match against Casey Demons at IKON Park on Sunday. Philp hasn’t played since breaking his foot against Coburg in Round 14 last year.

Jordan Boyd has been named to make his return from a three-week AFL suspension, while captain Ben Crocker is back from a hamstring injury, with Zac Fisher being promoted to the AFL team.

The Demons have a powerful list of inclusions, with swingman Tom McDonald returning from an ankle injury, key defender Adam Tomlinson, midfielder James Harmes and wingman Taj Woewodin back from the AFL, while first-year tall Kye Turner will play just his third game of the year after a long-term groin issue.

Brodie Grundy has been recalled by Simon Goodwin, while Ben Brown will miss a week with a sore knee and Oliver Sestan has been ruled out for the year with an elbow injury.

Braydon Preuss has also overcome injury to play his first game of the season when GWS visits Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval.

Preuss hasn’t played since Round 21 last year due to a back injury but will make a late run at helping the Giants make the finals in one or both grades when he returns alongside Academy prospects Charlie McCormack, who will be on debut, and Harvey Thomas.

Josh Fahey and Toby McMullin have been promoted to the AFL team and Will Shaw is out with a cheek injury.

The Bullants also have a debutant in Charlie Di Stefano, who hails from Goulburn Valley team Shepparton United, with Baker Smith, Bailey Ryan, Ben Ham and Harry Grace also coming in.

Frankston has named two debutants to take on Coburg on Saturday.

Victoria Metro captain and inside midfielder William Brown and intercept defender Cooper Trembath will play their first games as the Dolphins attempt to win at Piranha Park for the first time since 2006.

Rookies Justin Davies and Darcy Gilbert also come in, with star defender Ryley Stoddart ruled out for the season with a hamstring injury.

It will be a drought-breaking day either way, with the Lions hoping to snap a 19-match losing streak, but they will do it without former captain Ryan Exon, who will miss the last two games with facial injuries.

Williamstown captain Cam Polson’s horror run with soft tissue injuries has struck again, with a quad problem ruling him out of the Seagull’s trip to Queensland and their bid to take fourth spot off the Brisbane Lions.

Last game debutant Zac Banch is also out with a hamstring and VFA/VFL games record holder Ben Jolley has been spared the flight, with star midfielder Harry Jones among the four inclusions.

The Lions regain Kai Lohmann, James Tunstill and Jaspa Fletcher from AFL duties with Jaxon Prior and Deven Robertson promoted.

Port Melbourne will be without its captain and best player with Harvey Hooper suspended for what is now a trip to Swinburne Centre.

The Tigers made six changes, with Oakleigh Chargers pair Nathan Philactides and Luke Teal gaining another shot, while Maurice Rioli, Sam Banks and Rhyan Mansell also return.

Thomson Dow goes up to the AFL team, Judson Clarke has been ruled out for the year with a shoulder injury and Ben Miller and Will Bravo are injured.

Hayden Crozier, Harvey Gallagher and Ryan Gardner are all back from injury to boost Footscray’s hopes of a ninth-straight victory when they take on Box Hill Hawks at Box Hill City Oval, but the Bulldogs have lost Mitch Hannan for a year to a torn achilles and Robbie McComb to concussion.

The Hawks rang the changes with Lachie Bramble, Tyler Brockman, Lloyd Meek, Cam Mackenzie and Henry Hustwaite returning from the AFL list, Jaylon Thorpe back from injury and Frankston YCW’s Lachie Bryce earning a debut.

Jacob Koschitzke, Jack Scrimshaw, Harry Morrison and Bailey Macdonald after starring in the win over Sandringham a fortnight ago.

All matches in the 2023 Smithy’s VFL season are live streamed free via the AFL website and AFL Live Official App.

Smithy’s VFL broadcast partner, the Seven Network, will show one weekly game live and free on the Seven Network in Victoria and on 7Plus nationally. This week’s game will be Carlton vs Casey Demons.
