UNCAPPED Hawthorn rookie Will Sierakowski has been traded to North Melbourne.

In return, the Hawks will receive pick 58 in this year's NAB AFL Draft.

The 21 year-old will go onto the Kangaroos' senior list.

North Melbourne list manager Cameron Joyce said the club had been tracking Sierakowski in the VFL throughout 2011 and were excited to secure him.

"He runs well out of defence and through the middle of the ground and his skill level, especially by foot, is terrific," Joyce told kangaroos.com.au.

"He's also strong overhead.

"We are confident Will has the ability to play senior football in 2012 if an opportunity presents and his sharp improvement continues."

Sierakowski was one of Hawthorn's inaugural NSW scholarship holders at age 16.

He was rookie-listed by the Hawks ahead of the 2009 season, and won an upgrade to the senior list midway through 2011 after strong performances for Box Hill.

The former Sydneysider was an emergency in five games, but couldn't crack the Hawks' best 22.

Earlier this year Hawthorn development coach David Flood described Sierakowski as a "foot soldier".

Flood told hawthornfc.com.au that the New South Welshman was a disciplined running half-back or midfielder who could also play a run-with role.

"His form over the last two, two-and-a-half years has been really consistent all the way through and he's always improving," Flood said.

"He's a smart lad and he just gets the job done."

Despite growing up in rugby league heartland, Sierakowski comes from a rich Australian football bloodline.

His uncle Brian played 75 games, including the 1966 premiership, with St Kilda from 1964-68.

Brian's son David - Will's cousin - played over 100 AFL games with St Kilda and then West Coast in the mid-late 1990s and early 2000s.

And although not related by blood, four-time Richmond premiership player Michael Green is also in the family, married to Will's auntie.
