Dayne Beams has successfully overcome a broken foot and is a chance to return to the senior side this weekend for the trip to the Gold Coast against the newly established AFL Suns.
Beams has spent the last seven weeks recovering from a fracture in his fourth metatarsal in his right foot sustained in the round seven win over St Kilda.
The 21-year-old is listed as a test on the injury list and has been up and running on the repaired foot for the last four weeks.
“I feel really good and I have been running really strongly,” Beams told collingwoodfc.com.au.
“I had to wear the moon boot for the first two to three weeks before I could take it off and start running.
“It’s up to the coaches and doctors now to see if I can play.
“It probably doesn’t work in my favour that the VFL side has a bye this weekend.”
Beams, who was born in Yarrawonga in Victoria and grew up on the Gold Coast, was selected by Collingwood with the club’s 2nd pick (No. 29 overall) in the 2008 AFL Draft from AFLQ club Southport.
“It would be great to be able to play up in the Gold Coast where I spent most of my younger days on the footy field.
“The most difficult thing during the injury was to watch the boys play and not be out there. Rehab is pretty boring so not being able to train was tough.
“Once I was able to do leg weights I focused on strengthening my calf muscles because the doctors told me sometimes players coming back from foot injuries are prone to injuring their calves.
“I have still maintained by fitness through bike, grinder and the pool and for the last couple of weeks I have focused on getting the run in my legs.”
Collingwood general manager of football Geoff Walsh told the club’s website it will be a waiting game for the 51-game Magpie.
“We will have a close look at him during the club’s main session on Wednesday and will reassess from there.
“He has spent a fair amount of time off the footy field but with the work he has done inside and on the track, he has put himself in a good position for a return.”
Walsh also indicated the team could see the return of Alan Didak, who injured his calf during the interstate win against the Swans in round 14.
"Didak is another one who was close last week and will be in the mix for the trip up the coast."
