DESPITE acknowledging he had the yips, St Kilda forward Tim Membrey says his confidence in front of goal didn't desert him.

Membrey booted 8.15 in the first 10 rounds of the season, and in his first trip to Optus Stadium a month ago, against Fremantle, he booted 1.5.

The 24-year-old's return trip saw him slot six straight in the loss to West Coast last Saturday.

He acknowledged having struggled with his accuracy.

"To be honest, I didn't necessarily feel like my confidence had gone anywhere," Membrey told AFL.com.au.

"It's happened before where I had a bit of the yips but I managed to get it back on my terms. I still felt like I wanted the ball in my hands, having shots."

His teammates were supportive, almost too much at times.

"It can go the other way as well. It gets a bit annoying when everyone's coming up to you, but the boys were really good," Membrey said.

There were two aspects to fixing his goalkicking: the physical routine and the mental problems.

"I'd be lying if I said it wasn't (mental). It was one of those things that starts to play on your mind," Membrey said.

"You want to win and give the team opportunities to do that. It feels like at times you let the team down but it's one of those things, you've just got to keep hammering away."

Fixing that involved working with the club's sports psychologist Emma Murray and doing different exercises.

"Little things about getting the feeling back, telling myself things at the top of my mark and just trying to block out any other thoughts and purely be in the present in that time," Membrey said.

Membrey will keep working on that side of his game with Murray.

Meanwhile, not much changed with his routine itself, but goalkicking coach Ben Dixon offered some tips.

"Just getting that feeling back with the ball drop and those type of things," Membrey said.

"I'm going to miss goals in the future. It's just one of those things, but I just have to give myself the best opportunity when I do get a clear shot at goal and just make the most of it."

Membrey certainly didn't make the most of his shot in round six against Hawthorn, running in to kick his side's first goal five minutes into the second term for a seemingly unmissable chance before fluffing it.

"You've just got to laugh about those things. It's just one of those things where I just completely missed the ball. That's something I'll never live down," Membrey said.
