The rebel VFLW State Team and Smithy’s VFL State Team to take on the SANFL in the 2025 AAMI State Games have been named.

The famous rivalry between the SANFL and VFL will reignite this weekend, with men’s and women’s representative teams to clash in South Australia as part of the AFL’s Gather Round.

The inaugural rebel VFLW State Team will represent the Big V on Friday, April 11 when they take on the SANFL Women’s State Team at Alberton Oval from 6:30pm local.

It will be the first time since the rebel VFLW was established in 2017 that a women’s representative team will take the field.

The rebel VFLW State Team features players from nine clubs across the competition, with reigning premier North Melbourne leading the way with six representatives.

The team includes 17 players who have previously been listed by an AFLW club and ten members of the 2024 rebel VFLW Team of the Year.

New Collingwood skipper and 2024 Lambert-Pearce Medal winner Dom Carbone has been appointed captain of the rebel VFLW State Team, with Sandringham recruit Lauren Brazzale to serve as vice-captain.

The men’s clash between the Smithy’s VFL State Team and the SANFL’s West End State Team will take place at Tanunda Recreation Park in the Barossa on Saturday, April 12 from 2:45pm local.

The Smithy’s VFL State Team features a host of the best VFL-listed players from across the 21-team competition.

Fourteen clubs have a representative in the team, headed by 2024 runner-up the Southport Sharks, who have four players selected. Box Hill Hawks and Frankston each have three representatives, with Hawks captain Cal Porter named the emergency.

The Smithy’s VFL State Team features a mix of established VFL stars and players who have returned to the Smithy’s VFL from AFL clubs.

Nine players who were on AFL lists last year have been selected to wear the Big V on Saturday. They include Harry Arnold, Riley Bonner, Jack Bytel, Sam Durdin, Will Hamill, Nathan Kreuger, Darcy Macpherson, Ethan Stanley and James Tsitas.

2024 J.J. Liston Trophy winner Dom Brew has been reappointed captain after leading the team in its return to the representative stage last year.
