A review of all the action from Round 6 of the 2025 Smithy’s VFL season.
ESSENDON 1.3 4.5 7.10 10.13 (73)
NORTH MELBOURNE 4.3 6.6 7.7 12.11 (83)
NORTH Melbourne moved to sixth position after answering a third-quarter challenge from Essendon to win an entertaining contest by 10 points at Windy Hill on Friday.
The Kangaroos grabbed control with three late goals in the opening quarter and held sway until the Bombers hit back with a strong third quarter that saw them take the lead just before the three-quarter time siren through vice-captain Jackson Hately.
But visiting skipper Darcy Macpherson put his team on his back, snapping two magnificent goals within the first five minutes of the last term to regain an ascendancy the Kangaroos would not relinquish.
North Melbourne coach Tom Lynch threw Wil Dawson forward and he responded with two first-quarter goals and a third in the final-term burst to take his career tally to four, with Macpherson putting his hand up for best afield honours with 23 disposals and six inside-50s to go with his two match-turning goals.
Tasmanian teenager Nathaniel Sulzberger showed plenty on debut, with Zac Fisher mopping up well in defence with 28 touches and eight rebounds and Darcy Tucker bouncing back from his quiet AFL outing with 22 touches, five tackles and a goal.
Vigo Visentini is surely closing in on an AFL debut after another dominant showing in the ruck for Essendon, winning 45 hitouts, 16 disposals and a goal against the double team of Taylor Goad and Brynn Teakle.
Captain Xavier O’Neill (31 disposals, six marks, five tackles) led all comers, Matt Foley (seven marks, nine rebounds) starred in defence, draftee Zak Johnson had another strong day and Nic Quigg impressing with 12 contested possessions.
First-year defender Angus Clarke collected 19 disposals and six marks in his first outing after a broken collarbone, Matt Guelfi marked his hamstring return with a goal from 12 disposals and Nik Cox eased back after a calf complaint with 10 disposals.

WILLIAMSTOWN 4.4 7.8 9.9 16.12 (108)
SOUTHPORT SHARKS 4.4 7.7 11.12 15.15 (105)
NEVER write Williamstown off.
Facing an early flashpoint on their season at 1-4 with a lengthy injury list, the Seagulls flew home from 21 points down in time-on of the last quarter to stun undefeated Southport by three points at DSV Stadium.
Both teams had significant swings of momentum throughout the day as the undermanned Seagulls pushed their higher fancied rivals and pulled them back on a couple of occasions.
Williamstown led by 12 points when Heath Ollington kicked a goal after the quarter-time siren, before Brodie McLaughlin landed his third and fourth inside three minutes of the second term.
However, the Sharks hit back and held a narrow advantage for the next hour, despite losing Zach Molloy to concussion following after a fierce tackle in the goalmouth.
A lapse in concentration allowed Taine Dawson to goal after the siren at three quarter-time and when Max Pescud kicked his third and Brock Aston snapped another Southport was 27 points to the good and seemingly on its way to victory.
The home team snagged three in quick succession to stay in touch but Zac Foot and Jack Sexton responded to re-establish a 20-point break for the visitors and Hugh Dixon had the chance to seal it with a set shot entering time-on.
But he missed and Williamstown caught fire, with Jack Brown starting the rally before Tom Mundy kicked two crucial goals in his first VFL game for six years to cut the margin to two points.
McLaughlin missed a close set shot in the 28th minute but Nathan Colenso won a free kick in the grandstand pocket and snapped it home as the clock ticked to 31 minutes to put the Seagulls in front for the first time since half-time.
Foot burst from the centre bounce but his long shot from outside 50 sailed left and the siren sounded shortly after.
Jake Greiser was sensational for Williamstown, picking up 14 touches in the first quarter on his way 38, 10 marks and eight rebounds as he refused to let this season slip away.
Fellow defenders Joel Fitzgerald, 50-gamer Luke Parks and Harry Minton-Connell were also in strong touch, while McLaughlin ended with 5.3 from 15 touches and 11 marks and Mundy looked like he’d never been away with 3.1.
Noah Gadsby put the clamps on Jacob Dawson and Hugo Hall-Kahan did the same to Boyd Woodcock despite that pair still racking up 46 touches between the, while on the other side of the coin Will Sexton kept Riley Collier-Dawkins relatively in check.
Brayden Crossley convincingly won his much-anticipated battle with Tom Downie, dealing 48 hitouts to go with 15 disposals, five marks, six tackles and a goal, while Foot (28 disposals, six marks, eight entries, two goals) and Max Pescud (21 disposals, six tackles, three goals) were also outstanding.

WERRIBEE 6.2 8.8 12.12 19.15 (129)
FRANKSTON 3.2 8.4 9.6 14.6 (90)
WERRIBEE protected the longest-standing winning streak in the modern VFL when it outran Frankston by 39 points at Avalon Airport Oval.
The triumph came on the back of a dominant double team in attack that saw Hudson Garoni and Jay Dahlhaus kick 11 goals between them.
The Tigers haven’t lost at home to the Dolphins since 1997 but the visitors arrived with as much hope as they’d had at any stage in that streak. However, the home team held them at arm’s length for much of the day before easing away with it in the second half.
Werribee kicked six goals to three in the opening term to grab the upper hand but Frankston hit back with five of the first six of the second quarter, grabbing the lead when Matt Johnson hit the target in the 23rd minute.
But Dahlhaus’ third regained the advantage and the Tigers never looked back, adding four majors to one in the third and seven to five in the last as the game opened up.
Dahlhaus kicked five goals in the first three quarters on his way to 5.2 from 19 disposals and Garoni stepped up with three in the last to end up with 6.3 from 16 and 13 marks.
Werribee went +107 in disposals and +67 in marks, with Dom Brew (31 disposals, 13 clearances, eight tackles), Cooper Whyte (24 disposals, 11 clearances, one goal), Zac Banch (25 disposals, nine inside 50s, 0.4), Jack Riding (23 disposals, two goals) and Jake Smith (21 disposals, two goals) all prolific, while Jaelen Pavlidis pulled in 11 marks in defence.
Darby Hipwell (28 disposals, 11 contested, eight entries) starred in the middle for Frankston, Will Hamill (28 disposals, 10 rebounds) was excellent in defence and Trent Mynott laid 10 tackles and kicked two goals in his 100th game.

COLLINGWOOD 1.0 5.2 6.4 6.6 (42)
FOOTSCRAY BULLDOGS 3.6 8.9 10.14 16.18 (114)
FOOTSCRAY bounced back from consecutive shockers to move back into the top six with a 72-point belting of Collingwood at Victoria Park.
The Bulldogs went in seven spots lower on the ladder than the Magpies but were never troubled, putting on 34 scoring shots to 12 as they extended their lead at every change and blew the margin out with six unanswered goals in the final term.
Iliro Smit’s goal on the half-time siren could have given Collingwood some momentum at 25 points down and neither team kicked a goal for 18 minutes of the third term until Liam Hude cut the deficit to 22 points.
However, 50-gamer Caleb Poulter and Diesel Moloney’s majors in the shadows of the siren broke the home team’s spirit.
Footscray was +140 in disposals, +61 in marks and +30 for inside-50s as it had the top six ball-winners on the ground, led by Poulter’s 26 disposals, seven marks and three goals.
Harvey Gallagher also excelled with two goals from 28 disposals and seven inside-50s, meanwhile Taylor Duryea, Oskar Baker, Lachie Jaques and Nick Coffield had 91 touches and 46 marks between them.
Collingwood had few winners, but key defender Charlie Dean did a great job under siege to win 23 touches and take eight marks, with assistance from Tew Jiath (21 disposals, eight marks, eight rebounds), while Josh Browne had 22 touches and kicked two goals.

NORTHERN BULLANTS 3.4 6.7 7.7 8.8 (56)
PORT MELBOURNE 4.4 11.8 15.13 23.17 (155)
PORT Melbourne broke its season 2025 duck in devastating fashion, thumping a beleaguered Northern Bullants by 99 points at Genis Steel Oval.
The Bullants kicked the first two goals and looked to be on in the battle between the last two winless teams in the competition and they still led by 10 entering time-on, before late goals to Archi Manton and Harvey Hooper swung the momentum to the Borough.
The visitors blew the match open with seven goals to three in the second term and piled on 11 without reply from midway through the third until former Port man Sam Green grabbed a consolation in the shadows of the siren to rescue a triple-figure margin.
Port had 89 more disposals and 30 more inside-50s as Ajang Kuol Mun (16 disposals, 39 hitouts, two goals) dominated in the ruck.
Josh Green and Charlie Lazzaro got things moving at the base of the packs, Dom Bedendo (22 disposals, eight marks, four goals) and Hooper (25 disposals, two goals) were too slick for the Bullants, while Manton had a field day in attack to take six marks and boot 5.3 and Drew Lloyd also bobbed up with three.
Jean-Luc Velissaris, Paddy Fairlie and former Borough player Liam Coghlan worked tirelessly for the Bullants, but they didn’t have enough mates as Port Melbourne recorded its 18th win in 20 games head-to-head and recorded its biggest victory in 88 matches at Genis Steel Oval.

BOX HILL HAWKS 3.1 5.1 7.5 9.12 (66)
RICHMOND 6.2 11.4 11.5 14.7 (91)
FOR the second year in a row, Richmond copped an embarrassing 100-point plus hiding in the early part of the season.
And for the second year in a row, the Tigers bounced back a week later to stun their next opponent in comprehensive fashion.
Taking on an undefeated premiership contender, Richmond kicked five of the first six goals and led from start to finish to shock Box Hill Hawks by 25 points at Kinetic Stadium on Saturday night.
Jasper Alger kicked a goal inside the opening minute to set the tone and after Calsher Dear responded quickly it was all one-way traffic, as Oliver Hayes-Brown and Massimo Raso hit the target twice each, with only Jasper Scaife’s goal on the siren keeping the damage to 19 points.
The Tigers added another five goals to two in the second term to blow the margin out to 39 by half-time but they went to sleep after the break as the Hawks ground their way back only to blow opportunity after opportunity/
The Hawks kicked 4.10 to 0.1 until the midpoint of the last quarter, including six consecutive behinds either side of three quarter-time. And they paid the price as Richmond steadied through a long-range set shot from Kane McAuliffe, before Alger and Jacob Bauer stretched the margin with late majors.
McAuliffe continued his fine run of form with 23 disposals, eight marks, 11 tackles, six entries and two goals to be best afield, with Kaleb Smith having one of his best games to lead all comers with 31 touches, 10 marks and six rebounds. Tom McCarthy, Tyler Sonsie, Alger (three goals) and debutant Sean Lai (two goals) also impressed.
Box Hill was best served by Ned Reeves with 20 disposals, five marks, 38 hitouts and seven clearances, while Bodie Ryan, Trent Bianco, Noah Mraz and Seamus Mitchell could all hold their heads high and Ben Cavarra kicked two goals in his second game back from a knee reconstruction.

BRISBANE LIONS 3.3 9.5 11.7 14.11 (95)
GOLD COAST SUNS 5.3 6.5 11.7 14.9 (93)
GOLD Coast dared to beat the Bear in the first quarter, but it was the home team that bared its teeth as Harry Arnold gave the Brisbane Lions a thrilling two-point win over the Suns in an epic VFL QClash at Brighton Homes Arena on Sunday.
If Williamstown and Southport produced one of the games of the year on Saturday, the Lions and Suns made their own nomination in a classic contest that featured nine lead changes, eight of them in the second half.
Gold Coast looked like romping to a sixth consecutive QClash win when it banged on the first five goals inside 18 minutes to jump to a 31-point advantage before Brisbane turned up, slamming on nine of the next 10 to surge to an unlikely 18-point lead by the main break.
Elliott Himmelberg’s third goal in the opening minute of the third quarter swung momentum again and when he nailed his fourth eight minutes later the Suns were in front, only for Jack Manly to respond immediately with two of his own, before goals to the unstoppable Brayden Fiorini and Ned Moyle levelled things up turning for home.
Rocking the old Bears pyramid from 1987-91, Brisbane led by two points entering time-on, with Fiorini and Manly swapping the lead with their third goals each before Ben Jepson looked to have sealed a Suns win with a terrific snap in the 29th minute.
But Brisbane made one last surge forward and Arnold found separation out the back to mark uncontested 15m out and seal the win with his third goal after 31 minutes.
Keidean Coleman made a wonderful comeback from his knee reconstruction to pick up 28 disposals, 10 marks and nine rebounds, with support from Darragh Joyce (21 disposals, 11 marks, 10 rebounds), James Tunstill (26 disposals, six inside-50s, two goals) and Deven Robertson (24 disposals, 16 contested, seven marks, eight tackles).
There efforts helped cover the loss of Brandon Ryan (concussion) and Darcy Fort (rested) by half-time.
Fiorini continued his red-hot form, piling up 47 touches (15 contested) for the second time in three weeks and this time adding 10 marks, 11 tackles, eight clearances, seven inside-50s, five rebounds and three goals.
It gives him 161 disposals and eight goals in his past four games at an amazing average of 40.3 as he continues to push hard for a spot back in the AFL team.
Alex Davies, Jepson and Sam Clohesy starred in the midfield for the Suns under Ned Moyle (42 hitouts), while Lloyd Johnston and Sean Lemmens did well down back and Himmelberg booted four goals in his best outing since heading north from Adelaide.

COBURG 4.3 8.6 9.6 15.10 (100)
CARLTON 2.7 5.7 9.11 11.12 (78)
COBURG grabbed its second consecutive win and moved to within four points of the top 10 after a five-goal haul from Mitch Podhajski helped it outlast Carlton by 22 points at Barry Plant Park.
Podhajski took just 25 seconds to kick the first goal and the Lions led for most of the day after the Blues wasted a long period of control in the opening quarter to spray 2.7 and fall eight points behind at the first break.
Coburg extended the gap to 17 at half-time but Carlton hit back in the third term, which included three lead changes, with the visitors turning for home five points up when captain Liam McMahon kicked his third in the shadows of the siren.
But 50-gamer Matt Allison snapped the first goal of the last quarter inside 30 seconds to regain the lead for Coburg. Podhajski then slammed on three more before Allison kicked his second just before the final siren as Coburg marked its annual Vicki Cleary Memorial Day in style.
Podhajski’s five goals came from 21 disposals and 12 marks in a best-afield display, with prime movers Flynn Gentile (two goals), Joel Trudgeon and Donovan Toohey all prominent and Josh D’Intinosante again impressive in the middle.
But it wasn’t all roses for Coburg, with ruckman Cooper Keogh finishing the match on crutches with what appeared to be a foot injury that will be keenly monitored with the mid-season draft just three weeks away.
Jaxon Binns roamed far and wide for the Blues with 33 touches, eight marks, eight inside-50s, eight rebounds and a goal. Defenders Jordan Boyd and Ethan Phillips did their best to hold back the tide, while McMahon and Hudson O’Keeffe booted three goals each and Marc Pittonet cashed in on Keogh’s absence with a strong display.

SYDNEY SWANS 5.4 6.8 9.8 9.11 (65)
GWS GIANTS 5.1 5.3 10.7 13.13 (91)
GWS overwhelmed a brave Sydney in the second half, winning by 26 points at the SCG to remain undefeated and move a game clear on top of the Smithy’s VFL ladder.
The Giants looked like rolling on their merry way when Cody Angove gave his side a two-goal buffer 20 minutes into the contest, before the Swans produced some of their best footy of the season.
The home side kicked three goals in a row to grab the lead by quarter-time and then held their crosstown rivals goalless in the second quarter.
Peter Ladhams and Tom Hanily kicked great goals early in the third to give Sydney a 22-point lead but that sparked GWS into action and the visitors got their running game going to give their powerful forward line every opportunity to kick a winning score.
The Giants took the lead when Max Gruzewski slotted his second at the 32-minute mark of the third term and there was only going to be one winner after that as the Giants got better and the Swans ran out of legs.
Angove starred for the Giants with 19 disposals and three goals, with midfielders Jack Ough (32 disposals, 10 clearances, eight entries), former Swan Marc Sheather and Harry Rowston running riot in the middle, Wade Derksen strong down back, with Gruzewski and Nathan Wardius held to 3.5 between them.
Nic Shipley (24 disposals, six clearances, 11 tackles) and AFL sub Angus Sheldrick were strong in the midfield for Sydney, Caleb Mitchell impressed again in his new role across half back, Lachie Hunter worked hard in the last line of defence and Ladhams was strong in attack with 2.3, while Hanily responded to his omission with three goals.
