The Smithy’s VFL teams for Round 7.

AFL stars Tom Mitchell and Taylor Adams will start their journeys back to the top level when they return from significant injuries in the Smithy’s VFL on Saturday.

Brownlow medallist Mitchell will make his VFL debut for Collingwood when he plays managed minutes against the Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval.

The 31-year-old hasn’t played a game at any level since sustaining a serious foot injury in the Magpies’ 2024 Anzac Day draw with Essendon and not at State league level since his last three games for Sydney’s NEAFL team in 2015.

Adams, 31, tore his hamstring in Sydney’s Opening Round AFL loss to Hawthorn and suffered a recurrence a few weeks ago, meaning he will face Essendon at Windy Hill after eight weeks on the sidelines.

Essendon has recalled Jayden Laverde after serving a two-match suspension for headbutting.

Port Melbourne has pulled a surprise, signing and then rushing former Bombers AFL and Carlton VFL goal sneak Ned Cahill into their team to face Southport at Fankhauser Reserve.

Meanwhile former Carlton AFL captain Sam Docherty is back at VFL level after being dropped for the second time this season.

The cavalry has returned for the Northern Bullants against Collingwood, with captain Liam Mackie and talented ruck-forward Will Elliott returning from injury to replace hurt pair Wal Wuol and Liam Taylor.

The Magpies gives a debut to Eastern Ranges’ mid-season draft prospect Rod Ali and former Hawthorn forward Josh Bennetts after his hamstring injury, and regain key forward Charlie West.

At Windy Hill, Laverde will be joined in Essendon’s team by AFL omissions Elijah Tsatas and Jye Menzie, with Archer Day-Wicks, Saad El-Hawli and Zak Johnson winning call-ups alongside last week’s late withdrawal Lewis Hayes.

Sydney regains defender Patrick Snell alongside Adams and will unveil Cooper MacDonald, who played 11 VFL games for Collingwood last year and started this season on the Magpies’ list.

However the Swans will be without the promoted Angus Sheldrick and injured Will Edwards, while Lachie Hunter is unavailable.

Coburg has suffered a huge blow to its chances of pushing for a finals berth with star ruckman Cooper Keogh ruled out for the remainder of the season after suffering a lisfranc injury in his foot during the stirring win over Carlton last week.

It’s a shattering blow for Keogh, who was considered a huge mid-season draft fancy, with the Lions calling on former AFL-listed Cat Joe Furphy to fill his shoes. Kyle Weightman will make an early return from the serious hamstring injury he copped in Round 1.

Frankston has included star interceptor Joe Lloyd for the Saturday night clash against the Lions, with Dromana forward Clayton Gay to make his VFL debut and add to his three SANFL games for West Adelaide in 2022.

North Melbourne copped a horror postscript to its impressive win over Essendon last week with defender Miller Bergman tearing his ACL in the dying stages and being ruled out for the season.

The Kangaroos have powered up their backline as they prepare to host the Brisbane Lions, with Kallan Dawson and Adam Tomlinson back in the team and young interceptor Cooper Trembath to finally make his club debut after arriving at Arden St last season.

Jedd Busslinger returns to Footscray’s team to meet Casey Demons after finally making his AFL bow, with draftee Josh Dolan also included, while the Demons made five changes, with Jack Billings, Jack van Rooyen, Taj Woewodin and Matt Jefferson in the AFL and Ricky Mentha in concussion protocols.

Tom Fullarton is back from Melbourne duties, with Pines prime-mover Jarrod Gatt to make his VFL debut.

Docherty will be joined in Carlton’s team to meet Sandringham by ball magnet Will Hayes, Matt Carroll and Matt Duffy, the Irish signing who will finally play his first game of footy after tearing his ACL shortly after signing with the Blues in November 2023.

The Zebras have been bolstered by the returns of Zak Jones, Hunter Clark, Isaac Keeler and Gus McLennan, but they will be without captain Blake Watson for at least a week with an ankle injury, while Hugh Boxshall and Liam O’Connell have been named for St Kilda and Alix Tauru is suspended.

Werribee is unchanged for its home blockbuster against a Box Hill Hawks team that hasn’t won at Avalon Airport Oval in 12 years, with the Hawks naming Jai Serong and Nathan Philactides to replace the rested Sam Durdin and hamstrung Ben Cavarra.

Tobe Watson has won his spot back in Port Melbourne’s team alongside Cahill as Jayden Davey is injured, with Southport recalling Wylie Buzza from illness but losing Mack Willis for a month with a shoulder injury and Zach Molloy to concussion protocols.

GWS will unveil No.18 draft pick Oliver Hannaford when it takes on Geelong at GMHBA Stadium on Sunday.

The Sandurst and GWV Rebels product been sidelined by a wrist injury but is ready to wear the big G for the first time in G-town, coming into the team alongside James Leake to replace the promoted Cody Angove.

The Cats have lost Jake Kolodjashnij, Brock Williamson and Jack Sarcevic to injury and Ted Clohesy to promotion but George Stevens and Oli Wiltshire return to the line-up.
