The Smithy’s VFL teams for Round 8.

It will be a heart-warming sight at Arden Street Oval on Sunday when Richmond captain Lachie Street and lively forward Mykelti Lefau make their comebacks from knee reconstructions in the Smithy’s VFL against North Melbourne.

The pair were part of the Tigers’ knee pandemic in the first half of last season that saw eight players go down in the space of three months, with Street landing awkwardly in the VFL against Footscray in Round 6 and Lefau hurt in the Round 12 AFL game against Geelong.

They return alongside Maurice Rioli, James Trezise, Mo Yassine and Harry Scott in a strong list of inclusions, although Kane McAuliffe, Tom Sims, Kaleb Smith, Joel Garner, Josh Smillie and Mate Colina represents a significant group of outs.

The Kangaroos regain Geordie Payne and Brynn Teakle, while Connor Downie will play only his second game of the year and Ben Huggard will make his Roos debut six years after his three VFL games for Essendon in 2019. Zac Fisher is a held-over emergency, Darcy Tucker has a back injury and Cooper Trembath has been rested.

Casey Demons have named half a team of AFL-listed players to return to their team to meet Southport at Casey Fields on Saturday, headlined by star defender Jake Lever after an ankle injury.

Lever will be joined by Jack Billings, Blake Howes, Jacob van Rooyen, Koltyn Tholstrup, Matt Jefferson, Taj Woewodin and Ricky Mentha, while Parkdale’s Ollie Green will make his debut, with the promoted Aidan Johnson the only AFL player dropping out.

Former Sun Finn Hay plays his first game for the Sharks and Elijah Reardon has also been included, with Jackson Edwards to miss a week with a hip injury.

Gold Coast prodigy Leo Lombard will make his first appearance for the season when the Suns take on Box Hill Hawks at People First Stadium on Saturday.

Lombard injured his shoulder in the AAMI Community Series but is ready to return, with fellow Academy newbie Lachie Gulbin and Connor Budarick also back from injury, while Ethan Read has dropped down and Nick Francis comes up from the Academy,

Prolific midfielder Henry Hustwaite, experienced defender Sam Durdin and youngster Jye Peacock are in for the Hawks, who lost the promoted Calsher Dear and Sam Frost and Ethan Stanley to concussion.

The cavalry is on its way back for Williamstown, with dangerous forwards Nick Ebinger and Mitch Cox returning from long-term injuries for the Seagulls’ must-win Terry Wheeler Cup clash with Footscray at DSV Stadium on Saturday.

Cox has been sidelined all season by calf injury and hasn’t played at VFL level since Round 18 last year – his only game since last June – while Ebinger suffered a soleus strain in the Round 2 loss to GWS and has returned a couple of weeks ahead of schedule. However, Lachie Gollant has been suspended for four weeks for a dangerous tackle against Southport a fortnight ago.

The Bulldogs regain Jedd Busslinger, Caleb Poulter, Harvey Gallagher and Oskar Baker from the AFL team and Phoenix Spicer from a hamstring, while former GWV Rebel and QAFL representative Fred Valpied will debut. Taylor Duryea and Arty Jones have been promoted and the luckless David Cuningham has a calf injury.

Coburg and Northern Bullants’ fortunes couldn’t be more contrasting ahead of Battle of Bell Street 162 at Barry Plant Park on Sunday.

The in-form Lions, coming off a heartbreaking loss to Frankston, regains captain Jesse Corigliano from an ankle injury and star recruit Jack Bytel from his knee problem, while the battling Bullants have lost star forward-ruck Will Elliott for at least six weeks with a hamstring injury and young ruckman Lochie Simpson for three weeks with a leg issue.

Deng Andrew, the older brother of Gold Coast’s Mac and Sydney’s Riak, will make his VFL debut for the Bullants alongside Greensborough midfielder Brody Glenn, with ruckman Liam Kolar, former Giant Giorgio Varagiannis and Aaron Hilton recalled.

Son of a gun Noah Bradshaw will play his first VFL game since 2022 when he makes his debut for undefeated GWS against his former team Collingwood at Victoria Park on Saturday.

Bradshaw, whose father Daniel was a triple premiership great at the Brisbane Lions, played three games for the Magpies three seasons ago and spent 2023 at Southport without playing.

The Magpies made one change, with Oleg Markov returning from his sub role in the AFL having been replaced by Wil Parker.

High flying forward Bailey McKenzie will make his debut for Sandringham against Werribee at Wilson Storage Trevor Barker Beach Oval on Sunday, with Harry Miller to play his first game for the Tigers.

McKenzie kicked six goals in a head-turning preliminary final for Sandringham Dragons last year and has been in form for Old Brighton under-19s this year to get his chance alongside the return of Dan Butler from injury, Hugh Boxshall and Patrick Said as Tobie Travaglia, Angus McLennan and Lance Collard get the St Kilda call-up.

Miller has been starring for Williamstown CYMS in the VAFA to get his chance for Werribee.

Geelong regains young guns Jhye Clark and Ted Clohesy from the AFL team among six changes for its tough game against a rejuvenated Port Melbourne at ETU Stadium on Saturday night, but skipper Dan Capiron has been rested, Tobyn Murray has a hamstring and Oli Wiltshire is the travelling AFL emergency.

The Borough is unchanged after a big win and a remarkable draw at Southport in the past two weeks.

Sydney captain Callum Mills will make his long-awaited comeback to football when he runs out in the Swans’ must-win Smithy’s VFL clash with Carlton at the SCG on Friday.

And the Blues have a returning star of their own, with Alex Cincotta to play his first game of the year after off-season hip surgery.

Mills hasn’t played since straining his hamstring at training after last year’s come-from-behind AFL qualifying final victory, with a plantar fascia tear on the eve of the season delaying his return by 10 weeks.

It will be Mills’ VFL debut, having only played nine NEAFL games for the Swans in 2014-15 while he was in the Academy before being drafted at pick 3 in 2015.

Sydney has named its strongest Smithy’s VFL team of the season, with Taylor Adams to play his second game back from injury, Hayden McLean and Ben Paton dropped from the AFL line-up and former AFL star Lachie Hunter also returning to action.

However, VFL captain Nic Shipley has a thumb injury, Caleb Mitchell is also injured and Peter Ladhams has been promoted.

Cincotta’s return is welcome for a Carlton team that has lost Jordan Boyd and Marc Pittonet to AFL duties and Will Hayes to being rested, with Diamond Creek small Taj Logan to make his debut.

Teams for all remaining Casey Demons vs Southport Sharks, North Melbourne vs Richmond and Sandringham vs Werribee will be published from 5:00pm Friday.
