DAISY Pearce will captain Melbourne in the inaugural season of the NAB AFL Women's competition.

Pearce, 28, has been named in the All Australian team six times and led Darebin to a fourth consecutive premiership last year.

Despite having been Demons skipper in their exhibition matches in 2013-16, Pearce told melbournefc.com.au she did not want to be automatically handed the role.

"I was pretty strong on it and I had a conversation with our coach Mick Stinear. I didn't want it to just roll over because it was a completely new team and program – a new beginning in a lot of ways," she said.

"I really wanted to be voted into this position like any new team and season, but I worked pretty hard on my own footy and made sure this group could come together quite quickly.

"It's nice to know that it (my leadership) was noticed and the other girls had the confidence in me to be captain."

Mel Hickey and Elise O'Dea have been named vice-captains.

Pearce will lead the team out for its first game of the AFL Women's competition against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Sunday, February 5.

Greater Western Sydney has also appointed its captain, with Amanda Farrugia to lead the side. Farrugia was born and raised in the west of Sydney and works as a school teacher in the region.

Emma Swanson will be her deputy, with Jess Bibby, Maddy Collier and Jessica Dal Pos making up the rest of the leadership group.
