FROM unexpected threes to unexpectedly missing out, an entertaining Brownlow Medal count delivered some surprises on Monday night.

Collingwood superstar Nick Daicos, as expected, claimed victory with a record 47 votes to win by 11.

There were some anomalies when comparing Brownlow votes to votes in the AFL Coaches Association's Champion Player of the Year, but not as many as previous years.

Overall, there were eight instances of players getting three votes from the umpires but none from the coaches, and 15 occasions where players picked up a perfect 10 from the coaches but got no love from the umpires.

That total of 23 was down from 34 in each of 2025 and 2024, and 35 in 2023.

That may be partly down to the umpires getting access to some statistics for Brownlow votes for the first time this year in a significant change to the voting process.

Perhaps the most surprising result was Jai Newcombe's 15-clearance game for Hawthorn against Greater Western Sydney in round 16, which landed no Brownlow votes but a perfect 10 from the coaches.

Round one
There were four huge differences in votes in round one. Sam Walsh (30 disposals and six clearances) landed maximum votes from the coaches after Carlton's win over Richmond, but none from the umpires. It was the same story for Adelaide half-back Wayne Milera (34 disposals against Collingwood) and North Melbourne defender Charlie Comben (18 disposals, 14 intercept possessions and a goal against Port Adelaide). Meanwhile, Hawk Connor Macdonald (24 disposals and two goals) landed three Brownlow votes but none from the coaches after Hawthorn's win over Essendon.

Round two
He got no love from the coaches, but Roo Harry Sheezel picked up three Brownlow votes in North's loss to West Coast. He had 39 disposals and eight clearances in the defeat at Optus Stadium.

Round six
It was the same story for St Kilda recruit Sam Flanders in round six against Adelaide. He had 30 disposals and 567 metres gained to earn three Brownlow votes, albeit none from the coaches.

Round nine
Touk Miller went unrecognised by the coaches, but the umpires saw him as best on ground in Gold Coast's win over St Kilda in Darwin. He had 31 disposals and kicked a goal. It was the opposite for Kade Chander, whose 18 touches and a major saw him get 10 votes from the coaches, but he received no Brownlow votes from Melbourne's win over West Coast at Marvel Stadium.

Round 10
He received maximum votes from the coaches, but there was no love from the umpires for Jordan Dawson from Adelaide's victory against North Melbourne. The Crows skipper had 24 disposals and kicked a goal in the 68-point win.

Round 11
Jarman Impey had 21 disposals, 780 metres gained and 12 intercept possessions in Hawthorn's narrow win over Adelaide in Launceston, but he got no Brownlow votes despite getting 10 from the coaches.

Round 13
The coaches and umpires disagreed on who was best on ground in Port Adelaide's narrow win over West Coast in Perth. Zak Butters (27 disposals and seven clearances) took home the three Brownlow votes, while teammate Esava Ratugolea (16 disposals and seven intercept marks) got no love after 10 coaches' votes.

Round 14
Max Holmes had 31 disposals and kicked a goal to guide Geelong past Gold Coast, but he received no Brownlow votes despite 10 from the coaches.

Round 15
It was the same story for Roo Caleb Daniel. He had 40 disposals, took 16 marks, had 493 metres gained and six score involvements in North's win over Richmond, and despite 10 coaches' votes, he got no love in the Brownlow.

Round 16
Jai Newcombe dominated Greater Western Sydney's midfield, but the Hawthorn co-captain got no love from the umpires despite his 10 coaches' votes. Newcombe had 31 disposals, 15 clearances and eight score involvements in the Hawks' win.

Round 18
Murphy Reid's 28 disposals and 12 score involvements caught the eyes of the coaches in Fremantle's win over Sydney, but the Docker received no Brownlow votes.

Round 19
That was also the case for Lions star Harris Andrews. He collected maximum coaches' votes for his 22 disposals and seven intercept marks in Brisbane's win over West Coast, but he too got no love from the umpires.

Round 21
Underrated Docker Karl Worner landed 10 coaches' votes for his 28 disposals, 13 marks and 10 intercept possessions against the Western Bulldogs, but none in the Brownlow. The three votes went to Murphy Reid (despite none from the coaches) for his 22 disposals.

Round 22
Francis Evans was the coaches' best in Carlton's win over St Kilda with 22 disposals and a goal, but he got no Brownlow votes. The three from the umpires (and none from the coaches) went to Sam Walsh, who had 26 disposals, seven clearances and a goal.

Round 23
Bailey Smith got no love from the coaches, but his 34 disposals and 601 metres gained caught the eyes of the umpires for three votes in Geelong's win over North Melbourne. Beau McCreery had 22 touches, 12 tackles and kicked a goal in Collingwood's draw with Hawthorn, and while he got maximum coaches' votes, he got none from the umpires.
