FREMANTLE superstar Nat Fyfe will continue as captain for the fourth straight season after the Dockers named an unchanged leadership group on Wednesday.

Fyfe will be supported by veteran David Mundy, star Michael Walters, key defenders Alex Pearce and Joel Hamling, and former Tiger Reece Conca.

The retention of the same six-man group, which was the result of a player vote, gives Fremantle stability on-field after a summer adjusting to significant off-field change.

Fyfe said the decision gave the club continuity.

"I think it's a great decision by the playing group to stick with the exact leadership group in 2020," Fyfe told the club's website on Wednesday.

"It shows that what the guys delivered in terms of setting the standards and leading in the right direction was on track.

"I think the six guys that we've got in there with Michael Walters, David Mundy, Joel Hamling, Reece Conca, Alex Pearce and myself, there's good touch points across the whole group."

Fyfe said the six players delivered leadership in the midfield, forward line and defence and were able to still provide that with early-season injuries.

Pearce and Hamling are sidelined because of ankle injuries but will be covered in a leadership sense by Conca, who has moved from an accountable midfield role into defence.

Fyfe, Walters and Mundy all appear likely to rotate through midfield and forward roles.

Conca, however, will be the only leader available for the Dockers' opening Marsh Community Series match, with Pearce (ankle), Hamling (ankle) and Mundy (leg) all injured and Fyfe and Walters representing the All-Stars in the State of Origin for Bushfire Relief match.

"I think in round one and two, we're probably going to be without a couple of our leaders so that means there's enough diversity in our leadership group to be able to cover all lines," Fyfe said.

Players voted on a 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 basis for who they wanted in leadership roles in what Fyfe described as a "very transparent" system, which "empowers the playing group to be able to choose who they want driving the bus".

The 2020 season will be Mundy's 11th as a member of Fremantle's leadership group and Fyfe's sixth. Walters has been an official leader for four seasons, with Pearce in his third year, and Hamling and Conca both in their second.

Fyfe said there was potential in third-year midfielder Andrew Brayshaw to eventually step into a leadership role, as well as recruits Blake Acres (St Kilda) and James Aish (Collingwood) and former Greater Western Sydney tall Rory Lobb.

The dual Brownlow medallist said the leadership group was "not a cigar club" and the club wanted to get as many players leading as possible.
