In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, 11 current and former AFL players have joined forces with renowned rapper Briggs to share a community service announcement - Old Style, COVID Style.

The humorous clip aired last night on Yokayi Footy, broadcast by NITV and AFL Media, designed to rally Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and footy fans around the nation to remain vigilant during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Old Style, COVID Style champions the resilience and tenacity of First Nations people in football, with Sydney Swans legend Michael O’Loughlin joining the one-and-only Briggs in coaching roles to deliver a COVID Style half-time address via Zoom to adhere to social distancing measures.

The collective star-power is a nod to the multi-generational contribution of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples on and off the field, and the long and celebrated history they have with the game.

With Indigenous communities remaining in a high-risk category for Coronavirus, Old Style, COVID Style delivers a message in an authentic way - humorous and informative - to keep COVID-19 health and safety measures front of mind while social distancing restrictions ease.

General Manager of Social Policy and Inclusion, Tanya Hosch, said the threat of COVID-19 to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander football communities extends far beyond the virus itself, with the impact potentially felt for future generations.

For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, football represents family, pride, and opportunity. It is a stage for our best athletes and performers to celebrate their cultures and bring their own personalities and care for their mob to light.

"I’m incredibly proud of the Old Style, COVID Style team for coming together, it’s a testament to their commitment to give back and help the community in a time of crisis. This deadly mob is demanding we ‘Byron Pickett the curve’, and it is a message for all Australians.
