The West Coast Eagles hosted a football coaching clinic yesterday for a group of very special children from Carers WA.
The brave youngsters had the opportunity to learn some new skills, go on a club tour and meet some of the Eagles rising stars. Andrew Gaff, Anton Hamp, Blayne Wilson, Jeremy McGovern and Scott Lycett spent some time with the young carers, having a chat, taking photos and signing posters.
“It’s great to provide an escape for these kids, as they have responsibilities above and beyond what you would imagine a young person should have in the home,” explains Elise Wilson from Carers WA.
All of the children were part of the Young Carers program, which means they are currently caring for a family member who may have a disability or illness. There are many challenges that young carers face, especially in maintaining their education and juggling their caring responsibilities.
The Young Carers Program at Carers WA supports young carers by providing social support, camps, and other day activities to provide an escape for these kids.
“The kids were so excited to be able to meet the players,” adds Wilson. “An opportunity like this does not come around often.
“After meeting the players, the young carers were eager to get back out onto the footy field to work on their technique, so they too could one day be just like their idols.
“Thank you to the players who took the time to meet with the kids. I don’t know if you realise just how valuable your contribution was.”
