WEST Coast coach John Worsfold says his side's focus will remain on round one, despite a NAB Cup Grand Final appearance being up for grabs when his side hosts Collingwood next Saturday night.

The Eagles progressed through to the semi-final stage of the pre-season competition with a 37-point win against Gold Coast at Patersons Stadium on Sunday.

Worsfold said his side could welcome back up to five players - including Beau Waters and Darren Glass - but the match would still be treated as little more than preparation for the season opener against North Melbourne.

"It's a semi-final, but it's two more games for us to work hard to make sure we improve," the coach said on Sunday night.

"It's about winning games in [the home and away] season; no one's going to remember how well we go in the NAB Cup if we don't win early games in the season.

"That's our absolute focus."

West Coast was boosted by the return of club champion Mark LeCras (one goal) and classy young midfielder Luke Shuey (14 disposals) on Sunday, but both were substituted at half-time in their first pre-season hit-outs.

Worsfold said he was pleased with their output, as well as the young midfield group as a whole, with Scott Selwood (20 disposals), Chris Masten (18) and Brad Ebert (12 and two goals) contributing.

"To get (Andrew) Gaff and Shuey through there was great, I thought Scott Selwood and Masten and Ebert were fairly solid," Worsfold said.

Dean Cox was a standout for the home side, winning 23 hit-outs and kicking two goals from his 16 possessions. The four-time All-Australian often lined up in the middle alongside Nic Naitanui, a tactic Worsfold said would continue.

"When he's on-ball he makes things happen, so we'll certainly use him in there at times throughout the year," the coach said.

"He (Cox) has had a good pre-season, he hasn't had the injuries that lingered on, so he's definitely trained harder and he's fitter. That's great for him and great for us."

While Andrew Strijk and Mark Nicoski could also return for next Saturday's semi-final, key defender Eric Mackenzie is in doubt after suffering a hamstring complaint during West Coast's warm-up on Sunday.

He was replaced by Brett Jones and will be assessed this week.

"Just in the last minute of the warm-up, doing some bumps, he felt something in the top of his hamstring," Worsfold said.

"[We] just weren't confident then, once he felt something we didn't want to take the risk of playing him."
