PORT Adelaide defender Alipate Carlile says his side is ready to exact revenge on the Brisbane Lions at AAMI Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Power led the Lions by five goals at three-quarter-time in the round four clash between the two sides last season, but capitulated in the rain to go down by 20 points in front of a stunned home crowd.

The quirky draw meant Port Adelaide didn’t get a chance for redemption last year, but Carlile said his teammates still hadn’t forgotten about the embarrassing loss.

“We had them (the Lions) where we wanted them for three quarters and then they ran over us in the rain in the fourth quarter. We knew we let one slip there and it wasn’t easy rocking up to training the next day,” Carlile said on Wednesday.

“We’re well aware of what how we went last time and, hopefully, we can go one better this time.”

The round four clash last season taught Carlile another valuable lesson.

The 22-year-old was entrusted with the job on Lions’ skipper Jonathan Brown and kept him quiet for three quarters.

But Brown, like most of the Lions, got away in the fourth quarter and finished with a return of 4.2. Daniel Bradshaw also chimed in with 5.5.

“It was my first occasion on him,” Carlile said.

“He’s a big brute and from that game I learned that you’ve got to concentrate for the full 120 minutes. It’s hard to shut players out completely, but you have to try and quell his influence and that will be one of my goals if I play on him this week.”

On Tuesday, Brown declared there was some “hatred” involved in the fierce rivalry between the 2004 grand finalists.

Carlile did not use the same terminology, but instead talked up the 10th-placed Power’s chances against the fifth-placed Lions.

“We’d like to think that we’re actually a bit better than them [the Lions] at the moment and we’d love for our home crowd to get out and support us,” he said.

“We think that if we can bring our best we can match it with them and probably beat them.”

The players were visibly upbeat at training on Wednesday given the news of coach Mark Williams’ contract offer on Tuesday.

Kane Cornes was restricted to running laps and Warren Tredrea, Marlon Motlop and Jackson Trengove also trained away from the main group.

However, the club expects all four to be available this weekend.

Steve Salopek, who was dropped last week, copped a knock during a drill, but appeared to be OK and Brett Ebert left the track early.

Robbie Gray is another player in doubt. He trained indoors and is battling groin and knee injuries.

Carlile said the players Saturday afternoon’s game against the Lions would be one of the most important for the year.

“We can’t afford to lose any home games and we’d like to win a few on the road as well, so we can walk into finals with a pretty good feeling about the team.”
